[Text Version] Unit Plan for Number Sense and Estimation Curriculum Unit Plan Mathematics First Grade Unit 7: Number Sense and Estimation Abstract In this unit children study numbers and number relationships, using estimation, mental computation, and modeling addition and subtraction with base ten blocks. They learn that in many situations, such as how long it will take to get to a friend's house, an estimate (rather than an exact answer) is good enough. Children recognize that it is more convenient to do simple calculations (such as adding ten and five) mentally, rather than with pencil and paper or with a calculator. They learn that base ten blocks are useful in modeling addition and subtraction situations, and in carrying out the computation. In modeling numerical relationships with base ten blocks, they learn the efficiency of using the least number of blocks, and how this relates to their computation. By the end of the unit, they are able to choose among estimation, mental computation, or computing with pencil and paper when confronted with a situation requiring computation.
