Extractions: The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) , with its thirty-five year record of support for regional projects and programs, has initiated an ambitious campaign to establish ten Regional Humanities Centers throughout the United States. The centers will become significant cultural and educational institutions devoted to exploring America's regional experience and how a "sense of place" infuses and enriches American history, culture, and traditions. The centers will also advance broad public participation in the humanities, encourage a wide-ranging exchange of ideas, and contribute both intellectually and economically in their regions. The NEH awarded San Francisco State University and UC Davis with regional center planning grants for the Pacific West region (Alaska, American Samoa, California, Guam, Hawai'i, the Northern Mariana Islands, Oregon, and Washington). Over the past 18 months, the Pacific West Center has taken shape from the input of advisors from throughout our region. Return to Top

Extractions: The Commonwealth Of The Northern Mariana Islands CNMI Emergency Management Office The US Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) consists of 14 of the northernmost islands of the 400-mile-long Mariana Islands chain. It is located about 3,000 miles west of Hawaii. In 1975, the islanders voted to form a commonwealth, and in 1978 they became self-governing. Capital: Saipan Governor: Mr. Pedro P. Tenorio Population: 44,800 (1992) mostly on Saipan CNMIs economy is based on trade, fishing, agriculture, light manufacturing and tourism. Geography: The Marianas mark the dividing line between the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Sea. CNMIs main islands are Saipan, Rota, and Tinian a combined land area of about 184 square miles. Pagan, Asuncion, and Farallon de Pajaros are active volcanoes. Major Hazards: Unlike Guam, the islands of CNMI do not have a history of being in the storm track. CNMI has suffered no major disasters in recent years, although its location in the Pacific makes it potentially subject to tropical storms or typhoons. Other possible hazards include earthquakes, tsunami, volcanic eruptions, hazardous-material spills, and transportation accidents.
