Teachers College Getting Your Teaching License Getting Your Teaching License WGU Offers You a Portable Teaching Credential! Teaching certification requirements vary from state to state within the U.S. While many states have similar approaches, every state has its own requirements and procedures for becoming licensed to teach. WGU designed its educator preparation programs to be highly portable, helping you to qualify to teach throughout the U.S. The WGU Teachers College has been the recipient of several federal and foundation grants, including $10 million from the U.S. Department of Education, in support of our vision to offer a national approach to licensure through online, competency-based programs. How You Become Certified to Teach Depending upon the state where you wish to teach, you may have two paths to become certified. 1. Direct Application You may choose to apply directly to the state where you wish to teach. You will submit evidence of receiving your WGU degree, transcripts, and other documents required by the state. Because you will have attended an online university, many states will treat you the same as if you had attended a teaching program at an out-of-state college or university. Additional requirements may also apply. Numerous states have already specifically approved or "accepted" WGU's teaching programs directly. These are shown in the chart below. In other states, you would likely use "reciprocity."
