The incidents of September 11 and their aftermath have touched everything in our lives. We in North Dakota felt the tragedy, and we're adjusting to a new era of heightened security. Still, we're hard at work building our future in North Dakota. September 11 pushed our nation's economy into recession. Gross national product, employment, and personal income have all declined nationwide. Here in North Dakota we are fighting that trend. Our economy is typically counter-cyclical, but we have also vigorously pursued job creation efforts. The national recession has worked to slow our growth; still in North Dakota we have increased wages and personal income, and reduced unemployment. Our revenues to date are running just ahead of projections, but to be prudent we recently requested the State's forecasting firm, Economy.com

Most of such opportunities are found on the Nationwide Opportunities pages. If you know of opportunities that are not listed on the SchoolGrants site, we would appreciate you letting me know about them! It is the SchoolGrants goal to provide as many opportunities as possible to benefit our Nation's children and their schools. This is only possible with your help and assistance.

Extractions: Prepared by Eric Clausen, Director North Dakota Geographic Alliance NDGA must apply to the National Geographic Society Education Foundation (NGSEF) each year to receive a North Dakota Geography Education Fund payout grant. Application guidelines this year were substantially different from previous years and as you may have noted (in the application copy sent separately) I responded to several application questions with a statement that the NDGA Board has not discussed the specified issue. Over the next several months I will prepare discussion documents (such as this one) so NDGA Board members can become familiar with issues those NGSEF questions raise. Please feel free to comment on issues raised in these discussion documents by sending messages to eric.clausen@minotstateu.edu Document Number 1: WHAT DOES THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY EDUCATION FOUNDATION WANT NDGA TO ACCOMPLISH? The new NGSEF grant guidelines emphasize NDGA must demonstrate measurable progress toward making Geography Education a North Dakota K-12 school priority. The guidelines do not describe a specific goal NDGA should aim for, but do give a few examples to illustrate what types of measurable progress NGSEF is seeking. One example is being able to demonstrate North Dakota high schools are adding Geography electives to their curricula. This discussion document takes that example as a starting point, projects the goal making that kind of progress implies, and also describes the magnitude of the task necessary to achieve that implied goal

On the other hand, North Dakota does not bar gays and lesbians from adoption or foster parenting. In terms of our feel for the state's reception to our efforts, in North Dakota's case it was favorable. In response to our very first query back in September of 1994, North Dakota sent back enough information to obviate the need for any further inquiries. The tone of the response was professional and very helpful. They even included a full page of contacts should we have further questions.
