Extractions: served since March 2, 2001 Welcome to the electronic version of Dakota Alliance , the newsletter of the North Dakota Geographic Alliance. The Alliance serves the geographic education community of North Dakota under grants from the National Geographic Society, the Legislature of the State of North Dakota, Minot State University, and others. NDGA HOME The final report is not quite yet available to the public, but its contentscan be described. In brief, the report says that spatial literacy needs to be a significant component within the American K-12 education system. It also says that GIS is a powerful tool that can support spatial literacy and assist American students, but some things need to happen for GIS to be used with substantial impact. One of the first public discussions of the final report will happen at the ESRI Education User Conference ("EdUC"; see www.esri.com/educ). On Saturday,July 23, from 10:30-12:00, Roger Downs and Tony deSouza (the two primary authors) will report on the project and the document. There will be plenty of time for discussion. For those who talk about the value of geography and the power of GIS, it will be hugely important to have a document from such an august body extolling the importance of spatial literacy and the potential of GIS for education. If you attend the EdUC, be sure to join us at this session on Saturday! If you will not be with us, be sure you visit the second website above to order your copy of the final report!

North Dakota is the first state in the country to make this program available to community colleges. The statewide license includes ArcView 3.3 for Windows, ArcView 9.x for Windows, ArcView 3.0 for Macintosh, and the ArcAtlas data set. The software is free to all North Dakota schools even if they have not participated in training provided through CTE. CTE coordinates training designed to teach North Dakota educators how to teach GIS as a standalone High School class. The first training was held in July 2004 for nine North Dakota educators. More training is planned for Summer 2005. Dates, locations, and additional information about the training will be available on the CTE web site The training and software is available to any North Dakota public or private school. The modular design of this program will facilitate schools to incorporate GIS units in other discipline areas such as math, science, geography, and agriculture classes. Modules could be utilized in middle school classrooms.

As a small gesture of thanks to our loyal readers, I am initiating a contest to enable readers to test their knowledge of North Dakota geography and geology. In this and subsequent issues, I will include a topographic map, ground photo, or air photo of some unidentified place in North Dakota. Readers will have an opportunity to examine the maps or photos and then to submit answers to questions regarding the locale. The staff at the NDGS will conduct the drawing. Prizes for the first contest will include a copy of John Bluemles Face of North Dakota (third edition) for one respondent and a Geologic Map of North Dakota for another. In future contests, NDGS will award these and other items, including casts of fossils found in North Dakota, posters, geologic fieldtrip guidebooks, and other items distributed by the NDGS.

North American Glaciotectonic Map A data base of geographic and glaciotectonic features for north America has This map was published at scale 12500000 by the north dakota Geological http://www.emporia.edu/earthsci/gage/naglatec.htm
Extractions: A data base of geographic and glaciotectonic features for North America has been constructed using the ARC/INFO system at the University of Regina. The geographic base consists of multiple coverages that include basic geography, continental geology, and glaciation limits. Glaciotectonic features are classified in four main categories: basement faults, concealed structures, ice-shoved hills, and source basins. Two maps have been published from the data base: Great Plains Glaciotectonics (Aber et al. 1991) and Glaciotectonic Map of North America (Aber et al. 1995)jump to references . Original digital data are located at the Data Access and Support Center (DASC) at the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS)see digital data The continent-wide distribution of glaciotectonic features follows the three-zone model for glacial landscapes; distribution of glaciotectonic features over the continent is related in general to the presence of deformable substrata. Glaciotectonic features are particularly abundant in the northern Great Plains region, where ice sheets advanced upslope over soft substratum. Basement faults and seismic zones, induced by glacial loading and unloading, are common in regions of hard bedrock. The Glaciotectonic Map of North America is the result of collaboration by more than 40 people from the United States and Canada during the period 1989 to 1995. Aber et al. (1993) provided a listing of most individuals. Key persons and their roles are listed below.

The U.S. Geological Survey ensures access to basic geospatial data and earth science information for users worldwide. Through its National Mapping Program, the U.S. Geological Survey "provides geographic, cartographic, and remotely sensed information, maps, and technical assistance, and it conducts related research in response to national needs." Through the U.S. Geological Survey, public funds are used to provide inexpensive maps to benefit the public. Among these benefits are the maps visitors receive when they tour national parks and forests. Maps and mapping data are used by emergency response systems, law enforcement, resource managers, and environmental monitoring projects. Private businesses and individual citizens also use U.S. Geological Survey products in a variety of ways to support the growth of commerce and augment the quality of life (U.S. Geological Survey, 1997). 1-North Dakota Brings People And Data Together north dakota Hub Explorer displaying Game and Fish Department information. All GIS Hub data is stored in a geographic coordinate system using north http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0403/ndhub1of2.html
Extractions: By Bob Nutsch, GIS Coordinator, State of North Dakota Since the early 1990s, North Dakota state agency personnel have been using GIS for data analysis and map production. However, complexity, duplication of effort, inefficient use of time, and costs were increasing every year because GIS staff at the state's agencies had developed a variety of data standards and storage methods and made modifications to the original data. North Dakota Hub Explorer displaying Game and Fish Department information. This map uses data from the State Water Commission and Department of Transportation. Within these state agencies, multiple copies of similar data with different dates, different projections, different formats, and different modifications were maintained. Personnel changes at these agencies made it increasingly difficult to find data. Even when desired data was located, it was difficult to know if the data was the most recent version. Data often required reprojection. In addition, as digital geospatial datasets grew in number and size, several agencies began to investigate designing their own independent database storage systems and, in some cases, their own Web-based systems. Clearly, a statewide solution for GIS data storage, sharing, and retrieval was needed.
