Optical Solutions - News/Events Optical Solutions Awarded GPON Contract from north dakota Coop. Red River RuralTelephone Association will overhaul its copper network with FTTP http://www.opticalsolutions.com/press/052305.html
Extractions: For Immediate Release May 23, 2005 Optical Solutions Awarded GPON Contract from North Dakota Co-op Red River Rural Telephone Association will overhaul its copper network with FTTP Based in Abercrombie, Red River is an independent telephone cooperative with 4,800 access lines serving the fertile Red River region that divides southeastern North Dakota and west-central Minnesota. Starting last spring, the cooperative initiated a multi-year fiber overbuild project that will ultimately span eight communities and 2,455 customers. Red River will use the FiberPath GPON FTTP system to deliver multiple lines of voice; high-speed data up to 3 Mbps or greater; and later, video service. As a cooperative we are focused on satisfying the needs of our member-owners, whether they live in town or beyond the city limits, said Red River Network Operations Manager Chuck Deisbeck. We knew when the time came to put a plow in the ground, it was going to be for fiber, not copper, because it would ensure our members have bandwidth for todays services as well as tomorrows. Red River also decided up front on a passive optical network (PON) platform vs. an active electronic system. Lightning and moisture are ongoing issues for us, and when your techs have to travel dozens of miles back and forth repairing electronics, the time and expense add up, Deisbeck said.
