Extractions: North Carolina in Action The mission of North Carolinas Nutrition and Physical Activity Program to Prevent Obesity and Other Chronic Diseases is to reverse the rising tide of obesity and chronic disease among North Carolinians by helping them to eat smart, move more, and achieve a healthy weight. This is being accomplished through multi-level policy and environmental change in several settings, including preschools and schools, worksites, health care, communities, and faith-based organizations. Several interventions are underway: The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP-SACC) aims to improve nutrition and physical activity environments and practices in child care centers. With the guidance of local Child Care Health Consultants (CCHC), center staff conduct self-assessments and establish action plans based on their findings. From evaluation data gathered so far, NAP-SACC promises to be an effective method to create policy and environmental change in child care centers. Plans to roll out the intervention statewide continue.
