Extractions: South Carolina Newspapers by Ron Allman Georgetown Times The Georgetown Times lays claim to being the oldest weekly newspaper in South Carolina because of its ties to the Georgetown Gazette, which was first published with the financial support of wealthy plantation owners May 8, 1798 by John Burd and a Mr. Elliott. The American Press Century Club of New York certified on April 15, 1934 that the Georgetown Times was established in 1797 and was enrolled as a member of that organization. Another newspaper, the Georgetown Comet, founded in 1874 by Moses L. Dorrill, editor, and E. H. Williams, editors and publishers, merged with the Horry News, which was founded in 1869 by T.W. Beatty, editor, and S.R. Rhodes, publisher. The two newspapers merged in 1877 with the Georgetown Times to become the Comet and News. Tarbox, Dorrill and Williams may have retained an interest in the newspaper. The newspaper changed names again in 1878 to become the Times and Comet, a Democratic newspaper with Doar as editor. Two other Doars, probably Josiah Doar's sons, J. Benjamin Doar and Russell Doar, were also associated with the paper.

Extractions: Ever been baffled by the bard? Vexed by his verse? Or perplexed by his puns? London's Globe theatre thinks it has the answer: perform Shakespeare's plays in Shakespeare's dialect. The Globe will stage Troilus and Cressida for six weeks In August the theatre will stage an "original production" of Troilus and Cressida, with the actors performing the lines as closely as possibly to the play's first performance - in 1604. By opening night, they will have rehearsed using phonetic scripts for two months and, hopefully, will render the play just as its author intended. They say their accents are somewhere between Australian, Cornish, Irish and Scottish, with a dash of Yorkshire - yet bizarrely, completely intelligible if you happen to come from North Carolina. For example, the word "voice" is pronounced the same as "vice", "reason" as "raisin", "room" as "Rome", "one" as "own" - breathing new life into Shakespeare's rhyming and punning.

Asheville Magazine Unlike any southern town, Asheville, north carolina has long been declared Asheville Magazine, PO Box 17397, Asheville, NC 28816. advertisement http://www.newfrontier.com/asheville/
Extractions: attention has focused on these here mountains. P eople are gravitating to Asheville for a myriad of reasons. Good retirement property value (hence our elders), hordes of talented artists, and the socially flexible and tolerant, hence more artsy types, hippies and visionaries, a large gay/lesbian population, and a plethora of art galleries. The town is continually presented in the media. CBS News did a special "Eye On America" here, calling Asheville America's "new age" Mecca . We made Rolling Stone magazine, and US TODAY did a cover story. Asheville is a richly spiritual and metaphysical place, maybe because it's surrounded by mountains enjoying heavenly views, and angelic cloud forms, or it could be the huge amount of quartz in the ground...or maybe, as legend says, it's the energy that the Atlantian and Lemurian scientists implanted here after their civilization fell into the sea! Some 5,000 witches, along with Christianity's icon, Rev. Billy Graham, make this area their home. Yet the overwhelming majority of folks in the Asheville area were not born here, In fact long term natives seem a rarity!
