Educational Technology Relevant News Accrediting Bodies Considering Standards "The six bodies that grant accreditation to colleges and universities in the United States are near agreement on guidelines for evaluating distance education that differ from traditional accrediting standards by focusing on how much students learn. If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions." "Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Jane Oates, education advisor for Senator Edward Kennedy, stated in two different speeches this fall that what is needed (by Congress and the federal government) are not just stories and not just data, but "stories with data and data with stories." In response to these local calls for proof and in reaction to statements such as those from Ms. Oates, educators are searching for tools and instruments to measure and document the impact of technology, particularly microcomputers, on teaching and learning. Several groups have introduced within the last year measuring sticks of the impact of technology in education. The Milken Exchange has developed the Seven Dimensions for judging progress in implementing technology (

Extractions: TSSA Draft (v4.0) The Collaborative for Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA Collaborative) has facilitated the development of a national consensus on what P-12 administrators should know and be able to do to optimize the effective use of technology. This consensus is presented by the Collaborative (November 2001) as Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA). The Collaborative believes that comprehensive implementation of technology is, in itself, large-scale systemic reform. Leadership plays a key role in successful school reform. The CollaborativeÕs standards, therefore, focus on the role of leadership in enhancing learning and school operations through the use of technology. These standards are indicators of effective leadership for technology in schools. They define neither the minimum nor maximum level of knowledge and skills required of a leader, and are neither a comprehensive list nor a guaranteed recipe for effective technology leadership. Rather, these standards are a national consensus among educational stakeholders of what best indicates accomplished school leadership for comprehensive and effective use of technology in schools. The standards challenge almost every school administrator in some areas, yet each individual standard is attainable by the professional education leader. Although a national consensus, in no way should these standards inhibit new development, innovation, or progress for schools or for school leadership.

Extractions: Introduction Download the NC Wildlife Action Plan! Since the early 1990s the Teaming with Wildlife coalition has worked to secure funding for state fish and wildlife agencies to take preventative actions that help keep rare species from becoming endangered and keep common species common. Their efforts helped to establish the Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA) While CARA failed to pass during the 107th Congress (2000-2001), in fiscal year (FY) 2002 President Bush signed the State Wildlife Grants program (SWG) into law. This program distributed $85 million among the states. The program continued with an appropriation of $65 million in FY 2003 and an appropriation of $75 million in FY 2004. Continued annual appropriations represent support for the State Wildlife Grants program, and we are hopeful that long-term funding such that CARA would have provided will be achieved in the future.
