Extractions: Roughly equidistant from New Zealand and New Caledonia, the Norfolk Island group rises from the Pacific Ocean, three small, highly isolated islands. Early settlers found islands covered with mixed-species subtropical rainforest, and inhabited by an abundant and highly endemic avifauna, including the Norfolk Island green parrot ( Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae cookii ). However, centuries of human habitation led to devastating land clearance and the catastrophic introduction of alien species. The islands native biota is now mainly restricted to protected areas.

Extractions: Island of the Bounty The H.M.S. Bounty was sent to Tahiti in 1787 to obtain breadfruit trees and take them to the West Indies, where they would be a source of food for slaves. The ship had some troubles, but eventually reached Tahiti, loaded the breadfruit, and sailed for the West Indies in 1789. Part of the crew mutinied on April 29, 1789. The Captain, William Bligh, was set adrift with eighteen others. He sailed to Timor in what is now Indonesia. Fletcher Christian and crew sailed the Bounty to several islands, including Tahiti where they picked up a group of Tahitians, before sailing east to Pitcairn. Pitcairn had been discovered by the British in 1767, but was incorrectly located on British maps. This made it a place likely to be safe for some time. The Bounty was later burned to prevent its sighting and return of the mutineers for punishment. The island was not visited until 1808, when an American ship stopped. British ships did not come until 1814 (Christian 1982, 190). The mutineers were all dead except John Adams. No action was taken against him. Life had been violent on the small island in contrast to the peaceful way of life found today. The Island. Pitcairn is small. It is a volcanic peak that has been long dormant. It covers less than two square miles, but does rise to 1,100 feet. It is hilly and forested. The elevation gives it some protection from storms, that atoll type islands do not have, in that it cannot be flooded and swept away. The temperature average is in the 70's and 80's. Winds are fairly constant from the southeast and east. Fairly rough seas seem common. There is a year-long growing season.

Extractions: Softcover: ISBN 644 29384 5 This volume covers the vascular floras of Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. Volume 50 deals with Australia's remaining island territories - Christmas Is., Cocos (Keeling) Is., Ashmore Reef and Cartier Is. (all in the Indian Ocean); the Coral Sea Islands in the Pacific; and Macquarie Is., Heard Is. and McDonald Is. in the Southern Ocean. Lying almost exactly between New Caledonia and New Zealand, and about 625 km from each, Norfolk Island has a notable place in Australian history, firstly for its two periods of convict settlement and then as the new home for the Pitcairn Islanders, descendants of the Bounty mutineers. Its most famous plant is undoubtedly the Norfolk Island Pine ( Araucaria heterophylla ), extensively planted near the coast in mainland Australia. Although much of the island has been cleared, the Norfolk Island National Park protects about one fifth of the area of the island.
