The Nash Equilibrium, invented in 1950, is the best result that can be achieved by players who do not co-operate but know each other's possible moves. A standard example is that of two drivers in virgin territory deciding on which side of the road to drive. If both drive either on the right or on the left it is a Nash Equilibrium: any other result is not. But in more complex cases the Nash Equilibrium is not always the best possible one that could be achieved if there were co-operation or the intervention of some enlightened despot.

This something, strongly individual, could be a strange contour of the nose, a wild hair or a protruding chin. We all know, that we are very sensitive about the accuracy of the caricature. It must have qualities beyond those of a true picture. If the artist succeeds in producing the individual's specific variations of a common feature, the caricature becomes exciting and full of life, it is genuine. Thus, the artist must fuse the common general with the individual specific features. When the scientist tries to disclose the physical and chemical characteristics of living matter in order to understand and to explain the great variety of living forms, he must always bear in mind this combination of generality and individuality. He can distinguish a number of general properties which are common to all living forms, for example the ability to extract nutrition from the environment and to multiply so that the offspring is given a life pattern similar to that of the parents. Thus he sees an extreme regularity. Further, when the scientist studies the physical and chemical characteristics of the organism or of its cells he discerns new signs of strict organization and internal order. But he cannot neglect noticing that each individual in one or more respects differs from other individuals of the same species. Within the framework of strong order there must be space for individual irregularities.

His ashram, a symbol of his success, had been left in the hands of his closest devotees and brahmacharin. One young Western student, an Australian named Bevan Morris, had taken the unprecedented step of requesting the Maharishi to accept him formally as a chela. In preparation for the time when his master might have specific tasks for him, Bevan was to remain at the ashram and become acquainted with the rigours of his vocation. Custom decreed that as a brahmachari he must take on the traditional garb and habits of a monk and in addition to wearing ankle-length robes he also grew his beard and hair long. Since courses had been temporarily suspended at Shankaracharya Nagar, only the occasional visitor came to trespass on the solitude of the ashram.

Roy Porter, Associate Director of the Wellcome Institute of the History of Medicine, London, together with 34 other contributors, produced a second edition of this reference work in one convenient volume published by Oxford University Press in 1994. Together with Marilyn Ogilvie, Professor and Curator of the History of Science Collections at the University of Oklahoma, Porter edited a third edition of this biographical dictionary. Unfortunately, this highly acclaimed, prolific, and personally unconventional British historian died prematurely of an apparent heart attack on March 4, 2002 at the age of 55. The new edition includes entries by 43 contributors on 1260 men and women (compared to 1178 in the previous edition) from ancient times to the present day, with an emphasis on contemporary figures, in the fields cited above plus earth sciences, ranging in length from 7 lines (al-Sufi) to four pages (Sir Isaac Newton). Arranged alphabetically from Abbe to Zworykin, the extensively cross-referenced entries not only provide basic biographical information in historical and scientific context but also discuss the significance of the scientists contributions and show how their personal, social, political, religious, and artistic concerns affected their lives and careers. Once again, a short general introduction and succinct, updated historical reviews of the seven fields (810 pages each) are provided. More than 150 portraits, diagrams, photographs, and other illustrations are provideda welcome change from earlier editions, which did not contain any portraits.
