(approximate download time: 50 seconds at 28.8 K) This trip has been in the cards for a long time. My friends Wes, Tom and I started talking about it two years ago. We postponed it several times for various reasons. I ordered the travel award from Continental Airlines last summer. When I got up the morning of April 9, it was hard to believe I was actually going to fly to Australia. (Wes and Tom flew from Houston, Texas, on United. We met up in Sydney the morning of April 11.) As usual, my friendly cab driver, Diane K., who is able to find my well hidden address even at 6 AM, picked me up on time to get to SFO well before my flight. Renita, the very friendly Alaska Airlines ticketing agent, helped me checked my bags through to Sydney. I asked her about an upgrade to LAX, as my reward was for first class travel except for the short SFO-LAX leg. Alaska has a great feature that allows you to upgrade a short flight by paying them $40 at check in time. (You can also upgrade longer flights by paying more.) She said Alaska's rules didn't allow her to help me at ticketing because it was reward travel, but she would call ahead to the gate to see if they could do anything for me as there was plenty of room up front.
Orana Wildlife Park - Christchurch - New Zealand Naturally enough, the concept of having a new zoo in Christchurch was the zoowas centred around the development of a new zealand native fauna and flora http://www.oranawildlifepark.co.nz/history.htm
Extractions: THE FIRST 10 YEARS How It All Began The idea for Orana Wildlife Park began when a New Brighton resident, Neville Jemmett, suggested to the Christchurch City Council that a zoo should built on the recently completed land-fill dump at Bexley. Naturally enough, the concept of having a new zoo in Christchurch was widely reported by the news media and soon caught the imagination of the public. The South Island Zoological Society was formed in July 1970, and in a matter of weeks, had grown from the original eight founding members to over one hundred. A number of public meetings were held to debate the concept behind a modern zoological park, as well as to consider the funding and ongoing support the new project would require. It was soon established that the new venture would be an open range wildlife park with the design reflecting a feeling of the animal's natural habitat. The site at Bexley proved totally unsuited for the construction of such a wildlife park, but it wasn't long before a new site was proposed on McLeans Island, on land to be leased from the North Canterbury Catchment Board. Right - Committee views the Orana Park Site for the first time, September 1970.

Extractions: by Ben Best cryonics life-extension room parties. Weeks earlier I had made many e-mail arrangements with cryonicists for meeting including a gathering of Australian cryonicists at my room parties. Dealing with the organizers of AussieCon was difficult. Charles Taylor, who was in programming, was the only person who ever responded to any of my e-mail messages of all the people I tried to contact from e-mail addresses on the AussieCon website. After several exchanges I got Charles to put me on the Nanotechnology panel and to create a Y2K panel, of which I would be moderator. The Y2K panel took some arguing, but I convinced him that speculating about events in 100 days is similar to speculating about events in 100 years. (For my essays on the Y2K computer bug see the Computer section of my website.) It was Charlie who finally informed me that room parties were not allowed in the hotel where the events were being held and this was only after the hotel allowing parties was fully booked. It was not possible to contact the hotel directly since a booking agency was being used. Most of those at the booking agency were not very helpful either, but I finally found one helpful woman who put me on a waiting list. When she let me know of an available room from a cancellation, I took the room and sent her a personal money order for Aus$50 as a token of my appreciation. September 1st, 1999 disappeared from my life when I flew across the International Date Line (although I had a 40-hour September 12th on my return which could have been 43-hours had I not flown from Los Angeles to Toronto). In Melbourne, I shared the hotel room with Keith Lynch, who had also been my WorldCon roommate at Winnipeg, Glasgow & Los Angeles. Despite archiving CryoNet, receiving a Transport Training from Mike Darwin and more recently being President of the Life Extension Society in the Washington, DC area, Keith has still not signed-up with any cryonics organization and remains a "fellow traveler".

Extractions: I saw my first live Echidna walking slowly across the busy highway. It had made 3 lanes safely and I didn't hit it so I hope it made it to the other side. The Echidna is one of the egg-laying mammals or Monotremes. After hatching the mother suckles the newborn until it grows spines. She then puts it in a burrow and continues to suckle it for some time. The Echidna is active in the day time and feeds mostly on insects. The back is covered with spines. Rumor has it that the spines can puncture your car tires. True or not this provides some incentive for drivers to avoid running over one. The Echidna is not endangered. Late in the trip I saw a second Echidna crossing a smaller road and in the garden in Christchurch a slow moving Echidna was followed by a trail of tourists with cameras.
