He stopped wondering when he decided to spend a fifth year in high school, enrolling in a one-year program at Lafayette High School to train dental assistants, where he learned to take x-rays, question patients about their medical histories, make dental models. Now, wearing navy blue scrubs covered by a yellow smock to ward off infection, he works as a dental assistant at Kings County Hospital. "I enjoy knowing what procedures need to be done and explaining them to the patients," he says.Martinez has found his vocation.

Vocational Schools Time For School BBB Surveys vocational schools. new york, NY, October 21, 1996 -vocational schools provide the opportunity to break into a new career, http://www.newyork.bbb.org/alerts/vschools.html
Extractions: BBB Surveys Vocational Schools New York, NY, October 21, 1996- - Vocational schools provide the opportunity to break into a new career, or get ahead in a current one. But schools can be expensive, and if you choose the wrong one you might end up with nothing more than a hefty student loan. In an effort to help people find the best school for their needs, the BBB of Metropolitan New York surveyed 67 different business and trade schools in the New York area. This survey, made available for the first time today, includes information on each school's program, class size, program length, cost of tuition, availability of financial aid and other valuable information. Consumers interested in receiving any of the Bureau's surveys or reports, filing a complaint or receiving a firm's Reliability Rating can contact the BBB at (212) 533-6200. Calls cost $5.00 plus tax where applicable and can be charged to any major credit card. This information is also available at no cost on the World Wide Web at www.newyork.bbb.org, or by writing to the Bureau at 257 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010. The Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York is a not-for-profit organization funded by responsible businesses and consumers. Vocational Schools Report Business Bureau of Metropolitan new york conducted a survey of 67 vocationalschools located in Long Island, Westchester County and new york City. http://www.newyork.bbb.org/library/publications/subrep92.html
Extractions: Final Note Vocational schools enable prospective students to acquire the skills and training necessary to change, enhance or establish a career. In an effort to help consumers find the best vocational school for their needs, the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York conducted a survey of 67 vocational schools located in Long Island, Westchester County and New York City . The BBB's survey examines some of the most important characteristics to consider when choosing a vocational school, such as admission requirements, cost of tuition, available programs, class schedules, student services, internship programs, financial aid availability and other critical information. Admission Requirements Once you have determined the type of program you seek and have a list of schools which offer those programs, you should determine if you meet the necessary admission requirements. The majority of schools surveyed either require a high school diploma or GED Certificate. However, some schools will waive those requirements if you pass their entrance exam. Tuition Attending a vocational school requires serious financial commitment. In the BBB's survey, it costs an average of $4,700, to complete a vocational school program. While the amount you pay to attend a school is an important consideration in determining its value, it is not the sole indicator of the best school. An inexpensive school may not be the best deal for your needs; likewise, a very expensive school does not guarantee you the best education. Students should also remember that loans issued from the school or from other sources must be repaid, whether or not you complete the program or find the classes to be worthwhile. Therefore, students should not consider a school free simply because they are not paying anything at the time they are attending classes; they are, in reality, spending their own money and should consider it as such.

Computers For Youth, A New York City Non-Profit Project Enhance places computers into new york City public schools for at the School for Cooperative Technical Education, a vocational school near East http://www.cfy.org/NY_Software_News.html
Extractions: By Dan Beauchemin As it becomes increasingly apparent that knowledge of computers, software, and the Internet will be essential to success in the coming century, schools are placing more emphasis on computers in the classroom. But even with the price of computers dropping, they are common only in schools serving higher-income areas. Too often, inner-city schools can't even afford books and school supplies, let alone computers, and their students fall farther and father behind in the race to build skills and experience in the wired world. Enter Computers for Youth, a Manhattan-based non-profit organization. Founded in 1997, Computers for Youth is taking action to help disadvantaged schools and students gain the invaluable computer skills they will need. Its executive director, Elisabeth Stock, has plenty of experience broadening the electronic horizons of the disadvantaged: Before joining Computers for Youth in February 1999, Stock helped build the Nationwide Computers for Learning Program, which allowed federal agencies to donate surplus computers to needy schools. Computers for Youth has two main initiatives: Project Patchwork and Project Enhance. Project Patchwork focuses on putting computers into homes of needy students and getting both parents and kids accustomed to their use. Each home receives a personal computer, software, email accounts for family members, and Internet service for a trial period. Technical support is provided via telephone or email. Project Patchwork also provides a virtual community where the students can teach parents skills, help build a family budget, write a résumé, or build a home page. Community members can chat with others online.
