Extractions: We are happy to have presented our Second Teaching New York City History in K-12 Schools Conference. The first conference took place in April, 2001. Over 400 teachers attended 24 presentations. We had such an overwhelming response to the first conference that we were able to accommodate more participants and more presentations in 2003. This time, over 600 teachers attended 36 presentations. The conference offered both public and private school teachers the much needed opportunity to gather and share ideas, lessons and programs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only conference to focus on these needs. Happily, our mission coincided with that of the newly re-organized New York City Department of Education. The Gotham Center is committed to helping enhance students' knowledge and appreciation of New York City history. By working with teachers, K-12, The Gotham Center seeks to improve instruction and raise student achievement.

Extractions: New York, New York Participating colleges and universities are integrating arts in education into required teacher education courses Closer relationship between colleges and universities and local schools in continuing development of new teachers New K-12 curriculum based on constructivist principles of learning While traditional assessment techniques such as standardized tests can help provide an indication of student mastery over specific content, they are far less effective at measuring such complex skills as critical thinking, aesthetic perception, or cross-disciplinary understanding. To measure the broader impact of arts in education, alternative assessment strategies need to be explored. Two such strategies that Lincoln Center Institute has successfully employed in its work with educators and children are portfolio assessment and the Aesthetic Learning Interview, a method for eliciting student responses to a given work of art that helps indicate their perceptual and conceptual abilities. Curricular Frameworks: To capture Lincoln Center Institute's constructivist approach to education requires a new kind of curriculum frameworkone that focuses on process, encourages the active participation of learners, and engages teachers in creating curricula responsive to the specific needs and interests of their students. The Institute's curriculum framework is designed to help educators explore a work of art, discover ways to gain access to it, and construct experiential encounters for their students that illuminate the work.

Extractions: EMG was contracted to perform Building Condition Surveys and complete Five-Year Capital Facilities Plans for several school districts in the state of New York. The assessments were conducted to meet the requirements of eight NYCRR (New York Code of Rules and Regulations) Section 155, the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations of the state of New York health and safety in existing facilities standards. EMG designated a multidisciplinary team of architects and engineers who inspected the sites to assess the condition of the buildings, maintenance facilities, parking and paving and recreational facilities. As required by NYSDE, the teams included at least one NY licensed professional architect or Professional Engineer. During the assessments, all major building systems were addressed and all deficiencies were documented and rated. EMG consulted with district personnel in order to accurately prepare a Five-Year Capital Facilities Plan. This plan included a ranking of required repairs and cost estimates for each repair in existing structures. Estimates for new program needs within existing structures and a projection for additional space needs due to anticipated increases in enrollment were incorporated into the plan.
