Extractions: FREE PRESS RELIGION WRITER Detroit Lutheran Bishop Robert Rimbo has announced that he's moving to New York to become the pastor of a parish near Central Park, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. His resignation, after seven years in Detroit, is prompting an election on Nov. 18 and 19 for a new bishop to lead the 136 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregations in southeast Michigan. In some Christian denominations, bishops are ordained for life. However, Rimbo's church regards bishops as elected leaders who may resign to accept other posts.
Extractions: Reredos by Lee Lawrie St. Thomas Episcopal Church has been a New York institution since its founding in 1823/4. It has had four buildings, the first two 'uptown' on Broadway at Houston Street before it moved further uptown to Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street in 1870. The third building, scene of the marriage of Consuelo Vanderbilt to the 9th Duke of Marlborough , was designed by Richard Upjohn . It burned in 1905. The present church, the fourth, is a designated New York landmark that was designed by Ralph Adams Cram and Bertram G. Goodhue , also architects of St. Bartholomew's. First designs date from 1906; built 1911 - 1914, it opened for services in 1913. This masterpiece of a city church, with bold massing and a strong profile, has plain ashlar limestone surfaces in French High Gothic style , embellished with dense French Flamboyant Gothic detail in the window tracery, in the small arches of the triforium and in the rich pale stonework of the reredos, where Bertrand Goodhue's original genius in decoration, and sculpture designed by Lee Lawrie , are inspired by the altar screen at Winchester Cathedral in England.

Extractions: Home Encyclopedia Summa Fathers ... S > Syracuse A B C D ... CICDC - Home of the Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan (Syracusensis) The Diocese of Syracuse, in the State of New York, comprises the counties of Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego, and contains an area of 5626 square miles, a little more than one-ninth of the entire state. Out of a population of 609,041, about 161,000, or a little more than one-fourth, are Catholics. Missions Among the Indians The Oneidas and the Onondagas occupied lands near the shores of the lakes which bear their names. The first chosen president of the Iroquois was the venerable Ato-tao-ho, a famous Onondaga chief. The Onondagas were the central nation of the League, and not far from the present episcopal city, on Indian Hill, between the ravines formed by the west and middle branches of Limestone Creek in the town of Pompey, about two miles south of Manlius, was the village of Onondaga, the seat of government for the League of the Five Nations. It is probable that some of the Franciscan Fathers of the Recollect reform, whom Champlain obtained from France in 1614 to minister to the French settlers and convert the natives, visited this territory and offered up the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on the shores of Lakes Onondaga or Oneida, and perhaps what is now Oswego as early as 1615. Father Le Moyne, S.J., however, must be considered the real founder of the Church in the Diocese of Syracuse. Fathers Joseph Chaumonot and Claude Dablon were selected to begin the work of evangelization. They said Mass on the chosen site Sunday, 14 November 1654. A little bark chapel was soon constructed with the assistance of the Indians.
Extractions: Additional Essays First Clothes I wobbled down to the lobby where tables full of hand-knit sweaters were on sale to support the hospital. A miniature green sweater with Venetian glass buttons caught my eye. I picked it up and put it down repeatedly. What need was there for an expensive sweater when everything was on hold? Then something fierce and ancient bloomed in me. Bikes or no bikes, my son would have a good life, with leaf-green cardigans and all the kisses he could stand. No matter what. It was the one thing that I could control in an unpredictable world. Two days after giving birth, I had become a mother. These memories tumble back at the sight of the infant clothes encased in Auschwitz, Block 5. They are delicately embroidered and smocked. The deported mothers, after all, had been told to take along their best things in their suitcases, which, like the fathers of their children, were wrested from them upon arrival at the concentration camp. The fragility and size of the outfits lacerates the heart, but my mourning wells up from understanding that these mothers lost something far more precious to them than their own lives, if that can be imagined. They lost their maternal right to protect their beloved sons and daughters, many of them babies still in their first clothes. Words are helpless to describe what they must have suffered. info@judithdupre.com

In the wake of the dot-com implosion and recent business scandals, many are focusing their attention on what otherwise might have remained an obscure psychological disorder. Much of the New Economy bubble seems to have arisen from narcissism run amok: The grandiosity of crooked executives and their haughty contempt for business and accounting procedures; the relentless manipulation of (and by) investors, analysts, and employees; the utter lack of empathy for others; the complete and total denial of any wrongdoing when everything fell apart. With his life in shambles, Vankin attempted to understand the disorder that had come to define his existence. The result of this painful self-scrutiny and research was
