Extractions: Project History In 1997, The Palace of The Governors, New Mexico's State History Museum , began working on a digitization pilot project with two educational institutions in Santa Fe. Only a few museum projects of any kind had been completed previously in New Mexico, none involving the kind of partnership described here. The partners in this project, along with the Palace, were the SER Academy , an alternative Santa Fe high school for at-risk, predominantly Hispanic youth, and Santa Fe Community College The focus of this School-To-Work project, as it has become pegged, is a brief but significant episode of the Civil War that took place in New Mexico. Photographs, manuscripts, books, and artifacts associated with the Civil War in New Mexico were photographed, digitized, and catalogued by the teenage Academy students. The same students used the digitized materials to create a CIVIL WAR IN NEW MEXICO web site. The site will be available on publicly accessible computers at The Palace of The Governors, in Santa Fe, and on the World Wide Web. The roles of the partners in the collaboration were pretty straightforward: The Palace of The Governors provided physical materials (artifacts and photographs), intellectual content (scholarly articles), career mentoring from staff, and library resources where the students were taught to do genealogical research. The Academy selected the student-workers and provided daily instruction for them in various subjects, including software and hardware-related skill development. The community college contributed technological leadership, including a course in HTML for the students; the college also provided a clearly delineated educational path for the Academy students for after high school.

WHAT'S NEXT When Downs media Education Center came to us with the notion of helping the Giles works with teachers from a variety of new mexico schools and colleges. http://www.laplaza.org/about_lap/archives/ttp95/m_l/media_7.html
Extractions: by Bob McCannon Albuquerque Academy is pleased to be able to help expand media literacy in New Mexico and give the state pilot project a home for the next year. When Downs Media Education Center came to us with the notion of helping the project establish a permanent New Mexico base, we jumped at the opportunity to work with teachers from all around the state; it seemed to fit with our love of media education and our school's outreach program. With time short, we proposed a grant; it was accepted, and here we are. Who are we? Specifically, we are Bob McCannon and Giles Pennington. Giles is the head of the Academy summer session which is known for its innovative programs. Giles works with teachers from a variety of New Mexico schools and colleges. He also works with the business community and parents. Teaching about media has become Giles'favorite activity and he is chief cook and bottle washer for next fall's conference. "Teaching around Televison" which will be held next October 20-23 at the Academy. Bob McCannon also teaches media and has experience working with educators. He is the Coordinator of Multimedia and Technology at the Academy, and he is very interested in digital video and multimedia; he is author of the video, "Making Connections; Teaching Social Studies Through Technology," which was sponsored by Apple Computer and the National Council for the Social Studies. Bob was elected President of the New Mexico Council for the Social Studies several times, and during his leadership, the Council went from a small, Albuquerque-based group to a thriving organization with board members and functions statewide.
The National Front Everyone involved with the Downs media Education Center (DMEC) is inspired new mexico has proven itself to be the perfect pilot state for the National http://www.laplaza.org/about_lap/archives/ttp95/m_l/media_8.html
Extractions: Education can no longer be confined to the classroom. Real education happens every day to every person of every age. It happens on the board stage of the information highway. Everywhere we turn we are being educated by someone about something whether we know it or not. The trick is to learn how to process this information in a way which will lead to clearer thinking, contemporary skills and abilities, and a deeper sense of personal responsibility. Media literacy is a democracy issue, a labor issue, a health issue, a values issue, a justice issue and of course, and education issue. But above all it is an urgent issue for our nation; which is why the Downs Center began the National Media Literacy Project. Everyone involved with the Downs Media Education Center (DMEC) is inspired by the phenomenal success of the National Project's Pilot in the State of New Mexico. In one short year we have tens of thousands of New Mexican citizens with an understanding of basic media literacy concepts. Hundreds of New Mexican children are learning media literacy skills in their schools; dozens of New Mexican teachers have been trained to teach media literacy to their students and to other teachers; many school administrators, government officials and mass media personnel have attended on of our presentations or workshops and are hoisting the media literacy banner. New Mexico has proven itself to be the perfect pilot state for the National Media Literacy Project. As DMEC moves ahead on the national front we are proud to add the Albuquerque Academy to the National Media Literacy Project. The Academy will not be responsible for the pilot program within New Mexico and will be expanding the program that DMEC initiated during the past year. Bob McCannon and Giles Pennington are eminently qualified to act as the co-directors to whom we proudly pass the torch, and they have some very exciting plans for the coming year.

With its pristine Spanish-style houses and flowering gardens, this remote town seems an unlikely place to be the most dangerous spot in the United States. But for the past six months it has been under siege by terrorists. First, a man took some hostages and holed up inside No. 1 Mesquite St., threatening to blow up the place. A SWAT team had to shoot its way inside and take him out. Then came the discovery of a pipe-bomb factory in a neighbor's kitchen, and an explosion on a bus in which eight were killed or wounded.
