The four-day seminar highlighted the myriad issues facing the education system, including the need for urban school reform, and prepared board members and superintendents to face such issues. Of the 1,033 school districts in our state, the attendees represented 20 of the largest school districts, accounting for almost half of the public school students in Texas, Fox said. The institute provided a wonderful opportunity to represent Katy and gain valuable knowledge through classroom instructions, hands-on case studies, and interactive learning tools. The institute was sponsored by the Center for Reform of School Systems and featured group discussions, lectures and presentations from the institutes resident faculty members. Participants were presented with detailed case studies of past issues facing some of the states major school districts, and then examined how these districts tackled such issues as racism, overcrowding and board dysfunction.
Extractions: Comprehensive professional development systems for early care and education personnel are accessible and based on a clearly articulated framework; include a continuum of training and ongoing supports; define pathways that are tied to licensure, leading to qualifications and credentials; and address the needs of individual, adult learners. Enhancing a spirit of life-long learning is one goal of any professional development system; similar to this goal, a professional development system itself is never a finished product and should continually evolve and be refined to best meet the needs of the population it serves. Within professional development systems are several interconnected components. These components fall under five broad elements: 1) Funding; 2) Core Knowledge; 3) Qualifications and Credentials; 4) Quality Assurances; and 5) Access and Outreach. A one-page document that outlines and defines this simplified framework is available on the Web at http://nccic.org/pubs/goodstart/pdsystem.html

Junior Jacob Woolley is one of 250 students nationwide to receive this merit-based scholarship through AYUSA International. Jacobs overseas experience will be a valuable asset in continuing education, career and community life. My first reaction was shock, then happiness, and finally to tell everybody, Jacob said. I cant wait to begin the experience to live and learn more about the German culture. The CBYX Scholarship includes orientations, meetings, with government officials in Germany and the United States, a four-week language component, homestay with a volunteer German family, travel excursions throughout Germany, and international roundtrip airfare.
