Lasso Professional Alliance In Roswell, New Mexico, teachers are taking advantage of a web-based system that allows them to complete mandatory Special Education paperwork without ever touching a physical file folder. Teachers assign homework, but teachers have their own homework as well. And it's not just grading papers. There are vital forms to be filled out, facts to be documented, and usually there aren't enough hours in the school day to get all this paperwork done. So, home it goes with the teachers. But in Roswell, New Mexico, teachers are taking advantage of a web-based system that allows them to complete mandatory Special Education paperwork without ever touching a physical file folder a system built around FileMaker Pro, the award-winning database software from FileMaker Inc. There's more than nine thousand students in the Roswell School District, and nearly a third of them, from elementary through high school, participate in Special Education or Gifted programs. For each one of these students, there's a corresponding file containing state-mandated documentation. The key item in the folder is the Individual Education Plan, specifying the course to be followed by each student enrolled in a Special Education program. ?It's a document required by law, and it is discussed in detail by each Special Ed teacher in meetings with parents. The regulations governing these plans are strict, so ensuring that they're up to date is an essential task for teachers.

In 2002-2003, the Attorney General represented the Department of Game and Fish before the Water Quality Control Commission in a proceeding related to the restoration of native Gila Trout to the upper West Fork of the Gila River. In April, 2003, the WQCC approved the New Mexico Game and Fish Department’s (NMDGF) petition. The upper West Fork restoration project will increase the number of stream miles occupied by Gila Trout by 20% and will likely lead to the down-listing of the Gila Trout from endangered to threatened.

Extractions: on Proposed Revisions to 14.12.2.20 NMAC March 28, 2002 I am Kevin Jewell, a Policy Associate with the Consumers Union Southwest Regional Office, and lead researcher on Consumers Union SWRO's Manufactured Housing Project. I will be commenting on behalf of Consumers Union regarding proposed changes to the down payment and deposit rules, section 14.12.2.20 of the New Mexico Administrative Code. Consumers Union is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to providing consumers with information, education, and counsel about goods, services, health and personal finance. Consumers Union also initiates and cooperates with individual and group efforts to maintain and enhance the quality of life for consumers. Consumers Unions' income is solely derived from the sale of Consumer Reports, its other publications, and from noncommercial contributions, grants and fees. Consumers Union has advocated for improvements in the construction and sale of manufactured homes for over 25 years, starting with our work on the 1974 federal legislation that created the HUD code. Most recently, we launched a two year project to study equity building for low income manufactured home buyers. Homeownership is a national priority. Buying a home buys not just shelter, but a stake in the community and an opportunity for a family to build equity. Homeownership is a well-worn track up the economic ladder for families and communities alike.

SEVERAL ARTICLES IN THE NEW MEXICO Business Journal and a recent letter to the editor concerning public school education reform have made it imperative that we clarify certain points and state the facts concerning the education reform bill that passed the last session of the legislature. Unfortunately, the bill was vetoed by Governor Johnson but its supporters remain active in their advocacy of the very sound ideas represented in the reform package. The Legislative Education Initiatives and Accountability Task Force was made up of 64 New Mexicans drawn from all parts of the state. On the task force were people of diverse background including legislators, business people, a former governor, local school board members, public school principals, teachers, retired persons, university personnel and representation from the Commission on Higher Education, the chairperson of the State Board of Education and the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, representation from the State School Board Association, union members, and others. Both geographically and philosophically, the task force was a snapshot of New Mexico. The members brought years of knowledge and experience to the table. The task force members had their eye on the major point, which was reiterated by one or the other of the co-chairmen at every meeting: improving student achievement.
