The Higher Education Department understands that preparing for a college education must begin early, and through GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) and other efforts of the Higher Education Department strives to educate parents and students on the opportunities available to them. GEAR UP is a state partnership grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education for the purpose of educating at-risk students and their parents on college opportunities, including planning and financing.
