Overview Of 2003 And 2004 Childhood Obesity Bills new jersey. NJ SB 2684 (2003) and NJ AB 3663 (2003) Would have required health insurers to cover obesity reduction programs for children and adolescents http://www.ncsl.org/programs/health/childhoodobesity.htm
Extractions: Legislation for 2003-2004 2005 Update Now Available Obesity is epidemic in the United States. In the past two decades, rates of overweight and obesity have doubled for children and tripled in adolescents. The percentage of overweight among children and youth has climbed to the 15 percent range. Being overweight or obese increases risk for the top U.S. causes of death and disability including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Across the country, obesity carried a $117 billion price tag in 2000, accounting for 9 percent of the nationâs total health care costs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that if current obesity trends continue, one-third of all children, and one-half of African-American and Hispanic children, born in 2000 will develop diabetes. Fortunately, much can be done to prevent costly obesity-related health problems. State legislators have begun to aim prevention efforts at obesity risk factors that begin in childhoodâsuch as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and the increase in children diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

Extractions: About NCSL Services Overview ... Health var doctitle=document.title document.write(doctitle) Add to My NCSL Vending Machines in Schools Current as of March 1, 2005. Debates have ensued regarding soda and food vending machines in elementary, middle/junior and high schools. Some states have introduced and enacted legislation to replace existing food and drinks of minimal nutritional value for healthier options or to restrict student access to the machines. As of January 2004, Arkansas is the only state that has passed legislation banning vending machines in elementary schools. This is not just a state issue, however. Some cities and local schools districts have taken the lead and enacted policies to ban or replace certain foods and beverages in vending machines or restrict student access to the machines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) 2000 survey concluded that 43% of elementary schools, 89.4% of middle/junior high and 98.2% of senior high schools had either a vending machine or a school store, canteen, or snack bar where students could purchase competitive foods or beverages. Competitive foods are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as foods offered at school other than meals served through USDA school meal programs-school breakfast, school lunch and after school snack programs. According to the USDA, competitive food policies exist in many states and include laws that restrict access to food and beverage vending machines, school canteens and stores at certain times during the school day or limits access to foods with minimum nutritional value. Fannie E. Rippel Foundation -- President's Letter Support women at high health risk in new jersey, especially survivors of Increase knowledge of role of nutrition in health, especially for women and http://fdncenter.org/grantmaker/rippel/preslet.html
Extractions: The Fannie E. Rippel Foundation made a commitment to embark on a new strategic planning process when I was hired as President and Ted Probert was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees in June, 2004. The Foundation had not engaged in such a process for nearly five years. For most of the last year we have been working hard to review the latest literature on the health care priorities of the Foundation, attend a number of national health conferences, and hold more than 60 meetings with grantees, potential grantees and leaders in philanthropy and health care to broaden the Foundation's knowledge base. The focus of all of these efforts was to better understand recent developments in health care programs and identify state of the art practices related to Foundation priorities. We also wanted to know where there was adequate funding for key Foundation priorities and where there were funding gaps and opportunities. We desired to begin to ascertain how to better focus our philanthropy to maximize the impact of our gifts. Concomitantly, we embarked on a review of staff capabilities and anticipated vacancies, contrasted against program goals and Trustee needs. The planned retirement of the Treasurer and the expansion of the role of the administrative assistant into a more senior position with a different skill set resulted in the opportunity to hire two excellent new staff people in Irene Weber and Pam Hertenstein. This analysis of staff support for the priorities of the Foundation also resulted in the expansion of Nancy Ryan's role as Corporate Secretary to include program officer functions, working directly with grantees. A series of orientation activities were conducted by the former Treasurer, current Chairman and current Corporate Secretary for all new staff. In addition, we continued our focus on investing our assets wisely to assure a strong financial future for the Foundation and its grantees. The skill and insight of our Investment Committee should be particularly commended.

Extractions: Teen Esteem is a novel program that measures the effect of intervention on the relationship between exercise, nutrition, cardiovascular health and self-esteem among high school girls at Trenton Central High School. For many of the teenage girls participating, the program marks a new beginning for those who are facing their adolescence with obesity, metabolic syndrome and other major risk factors for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The program?s goal is to foster improved physical and mental health through education in nutrition, exercise and wellness that is enhanced by hands-on demonstrations of healthy cooking, exercise circuits, yoga and hip hop. Women?s heart disease presents significant challenges to the healthcare community, with symptoms more subtle than those experienced by men, including early warning signs that resemble the flu. A lack of understanding regarding the symptoms of heart disease in women, in addition to women?s style of communicating can result in a disconnect between patient and practitioner. In order to provide healthcare professionals with a system?s approach to female-centered patient care and to enhance the diagnostic model for women with heart disease, WHF sponsored a medical conference on October 13 titled, ?Bridging Communication to Promote Diagnosis of Women?s Heart Disease?, the second of a six-part series in the WHF Gender Care Initiative (GCI). Held at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, the conference featured keynote Nieca Goldberg, MD, author of Women Are Not Small Men. Dr. Goldberg is the Director of the Women?s Heart Program at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
Extractions: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, which actively promotes health in the community, has developed a program to help families eat right, exercise, learn and have fun together. The hospital, in partnership with Bristol-Myers Squibb, is sponsoring a free program called the Mercer County Family Health Challenge. Mercer County families who successfully complete the Family Health Challenge will be eligible to receive prizes including family health club memberships, exercise equipment, restaurant gift certificates and a week-long vacation. Completing the challenge will include free health screenings at the program's start and completion, and attendance at six free, one-session classes over the course of six months. Class topics include health education, nutrition, cooking and exercise. Health screenings include tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) and glucose, all of which will help determine the progress of participants. "It's no secret that rising obesity is a national epidemic," said Trish Patsaros, RWJ Hamilton certified diabetes educator and co-chairperson of the Mercer County Family Health Challenge committee. "What better way to learn what it takes to have healthier children or be healthier parents than to take action together through our challenge. It's a great way to get fit, learn how to eat well and set healthy patterns that can last a lifetime."
Extractions: Tuesday, February 15, 2005 Our goal is to reach out to seniors who do not regularly visit a physician and make them aware of the health risk factors for this age group. Screening tests are not designed to diagnose a disease, but to detect possible abnormal health problems and channel the patient to their physician to prevent complications. Early diagnosis followed by early treatment- by a physician - is beneficial to the patient, by alleviating symptoms or postponing mortality or both. Our fitness goals is to help people stay fit for daily living as long as possible. Good health habits, and good fitness habits go hand in hand and both can be fun.
