Following the creation and expansion of the domestic food assistance programs in the second half of the 20th century, severe hunger, which had been a significant national problem, has become rare. The food assistance programs were developed in several steps. Concerns about the nutritional status of young men drafted for service in World War II led to the enactment of the National School Lunch Act in 1946. The Food Stamp Program was established on a pilot basis in the early 1960s, and extended nationwide in the early 1970s

Bright Futures Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children and Adolescents, the cornerstone of the initiative, are currently undergoing a major revision by interdisciplinary panels of experts in infancy, early and middle childhood, and adolescence. The new Guidelines are expected to be available in early 2005. Background At the beginning of the 20th century, infectious diseases caused most of the morbidity and mortality in children. Although there has been great success in reducing contagious diseases, children today face new issues. Over the past several decades, major economic, social, and demographic changes have significantly affected American families. These societal changes have brought shifts in the chief causes of morbidity and mortality among children and adolescents. Injuries are now the leading cause of death for children older than 1 year. In addition, a significant percentage of American children have mental and emotional disorders. Developmental problems, educational failure, too much risk taking, lack of supervision, and child abuse are also among these "new morbidities." Also, the population of children with special health needs due to illness or disability has grown.

New Jersey PTA this new requirement and to pass other legislation to address child nutrition Getting Started with a Coordinated School health Program (Tennessee) http://www.njpta.org/com_nutrition.html
Extractions: Chairman Maureen Pfeffer Child obesity has become a health issue of epidemic proportions in this country. Between the late 1970s and 2000, the percent of children ages 611 that are overweight more than doubled, and the percent of adolescents ages 1219 that are overweight tripled. The rise in poor nutrition, inactivity, and weight problems is not only negatively affecting childrens health, but is also adversely affecting their academic achievement and possibly costing schools millions of dollars each year. One major step toward addressing this pressing issue was made on June 30 when the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization of 2004 was signed into law. This law governs free and reduced meals programs in public schools. Although the law does not include language to regulate competitive foods sold in vending machines, it does include a new requirement that school districts develop wellness policies with parent involvement that set goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities designed to promote student wellness. National PTA supported the passage of this bill and advocated for the language requiring wellness policies. We continue to work with policymakers and other child nutrition advocates to disseminate information about this new requirement and to pass other legislation to address child nutrition and wellness in the schools. It is up to you to speak up for all childrens health and to make these policies meaningful.
