Assessment Reform Proposal Summary new jersey is committed to developing a balanced state assessment system that to develop and implement a professional development plan for their staff, http://www.njpsa.org/docs/asformproposal.html
Extractions: November 15, 2002 THE VISION OVERVIEW A Call to Action for Assessment Reform , a comprehensive blueprint for reforming assessment in New Jersey. A major focus of A Call to Action is the development of a balanced student assessment system; one that includes both traditional paper and pencil tests and state-approved, locally-administered and locally-scored performance assessments. Taken together, the results of such a system will provide educators with far more comprehensive information on student achievement, and critical diagnostic information that will aid teachers in addressing the educational needs of individual students. Implementation of this balanced system creates significant opportunities for education reform, but also raises considerable technical challenges that must be carefully addressed through a well-planned pilot project. A major component of A Call to Action GOALS To develop high quality performance assessments that are a) aligned with the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards in each of the academic content areas, technology literacy and workforce readiness; and b) in combination with traditional paper and pencil tests provide a deeper assessment of student understanding
Testimony Of Ms. Joan Verplanck new jersey businesses contribute millions of dollars to education through Merck is supporting a K8 professional development program that focuses on http://edworkforce.house.gov/hearings/106th/fc/esea7199/verplanck.htm
Extractions: The New Jersey Chamber of Commerce fully endorses and supports the concepts and philosophies outlined in the document 'Principles for Reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act' as put forth by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, working as part of the Business Coalition for Education Reform. I would like to provide you with information about how those 'Principles' translate into program and policy initiatives that support the business agenda in education reform in New Jersey. There are thousands of New Jersey businesses involved in supporting education in the State - - involvement that goes well above and beyond the call of duty. New Jersey businesses contribute millions of dollars to education through direct financial support of school-based initiatives and individual student scholarships. Corporations also provide many other resources to schools - - discount programs, supplies, meeting facilities, and most importantly, human resources and expertise. While an accounting of all those resources has never been made, it is our estimate that the total would far exceed the billion-dollar mark. Prudential, Bell Atlantic, KPMG and Microsoft are working together to provide support for a program run by the State Chamber that helps schools infuse computer technology into the classroom. Small corporations like Edwards and Kelcey, Heavenly Ham, The Evidence Store, and Henri's Homemade are working with the State Chamber to place teachers in a job for a month over the summer so educators can better prepare students for their roles in the workforce of tomorrow, based on their first-hand experiences. This is but a small sample of the kinds of investment the business community in New Jersey is making in our schools.

Standards For Required Professional Development Of Teachers The new jersey Professional Teaching Standards Board believes that educators educators are lifelong learners, that professional development must be an http://www.state.nj.us/njded/profdev/standards.htm
Extractions: Professional Standards and Learning Home Standards for Required Professional Development of Teachers PREAMBLE The New Jersey Professional Teaching Standards Board believes that educators must be dedicated to a continuous plan of professional development that begins with their preservice activities, that continues with their induction into the profession, and that extends through the life of their professional career in education through on-going and sustained professional development endeavors. We further believe that effective educators are life-long learners, that professional development must be an on-going process of refining skills, inquiring into practice, and developing new methods. The professional strengths and accomplishments of the school faculty at large must work to complement the learning needs and requirements of the entire student population. Professional development activities must also complement both the needs of the educator and the goals and objectives of the school district. Further, these activities must focus on the conditions which affect student learning in order for teachers to develop the knowledge and expertise needed to enable students to function as independent thinkers and creative learners both in the school community and in the larger environment of society as a whole. In addition, professional development must engage each educator in a collegial and collaborative dialogue with other educators and education partners to broaden the knowledge and expertise needed to guide students toward the successful attainment and mastery of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and to create supportive and effective schools.
Critical Issue: Finding Time For Professional Development Teachers professional development in a climate of educational reform must addressthe Work with a group such as the new jersey Math Coalition, http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/educatrs/profdevl/pd300.htm
Extractions: ISSUE : Reform requires that teachers learn new roles and ways of teaching. That translates into a long-term developmental process requiring teachers to focus on changing their own practice. The problem is, where do teachers find the time for change in their already busy schedules? Unfortunately, "the demands posed by daily teaching and other aspects of the reform continue to absorb a bulk of teachers' energy, thought, and attention" (McDiarmid, 1995). This issue explores the vital concern of how to carve out time, opportunity, and other resources teachers need to realize the vision of education reform. Creating professional development opportunities that educators need in order to help all students achieve the ambitious learner goals of reform will require the support and ideas of everyone. OVERVIEW : School improvement efforts over the last few decades require teachers not only to study, implement, and assess learner outcomes outlined in local, state, and national educational standards but also to provide meaningful, engaged learning
