What Does Research Say About Early Childhood Education? Available from state education agencies and NCREL. Norwood new jersey Ablex.LloydJones, R., Lunsford, AA (Eds.). (1988). http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/stw_esys/5erly_ch.htm
Extractions: NCREL, Oak Brook, 1992 Early Childhood Education (ECE) is the term frequently applied to the education of young children from birth through age 8. Although early childhood education has existed since the creation of kindergarten in the 1800s, the last decade has seen a tremendous amount of attention devoted to the subject of early education for young children. The focus of this program, therefore, is to address curriculum and assessment issues related to the education of young children and discuss ways schools can change to become ready for children. Information that follows has been excerpted from position statements and guidelines developed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Association of Early Childhood Specialists in State Departments of Education (NAECS/SDE) for appropriately educating young children, ages 3 through 8. These reports reflect a growing consensus that the traditional scope and sequence approach to curriculum with its emphasis on drill and practice of isolated, academic skills does not reflect current knowledge of human learning and fails to produce students who possess the kind of higher-order thinking and problem-solving abilities that will be needed in the 21st century. Past success in improving basic skills in the "3 Rs" has not been matched by success in improving reading comprehension, writing fluency, or math problem-solving ability. In addition, it is evident that our schools are failing to produce future generations with even a working knowledge of the natural, physical, and social sciences, much less the kinds of minds that will create new knowledge in these areas. Specifically, these national organizations call for schooling to place greater emphasis on:

How can one tell which groups are reliable and which are not? There is no sure way, but nine precautionary questions may help: 1. Are its ideas inside the scientific mainstream? Some groups admit that they were formed because their founders felt alienated from the scientific community. One group that made no secret of this was actually called the American Quack Association , whose main purposes were to provide emotional support to its members, poke fun at their critics, and stimulate positive public feelings toward unconventional practitioners. The group was founded in 1985 by Jonathan Wright, M.D., who became its president, and Roy Kupsinel, M.D., a "holistic" practitioner from Florida, who became its vice-president. It attracted about 300 members but no longer appears active. 2. Who are its leaders and advisors?

Extractions: REPORT I. INTRODUCTION This paper identifies a number of school related problems confronting New Jersey youth returning to local communities and schools from juvenile detention facilities and Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC) programs and makes recommendations for improving the educational achievement of these youth. As many of the issues that confront youth returning from JJC residential commitments are the same or similar to those that impact youth returning to local schools from juvenile detention facilities and even placements in JJC day programs, this paper addresses broadly issues facing youth returning from JJC and juvenile detention facility programs to schools and communities. However, it also recognizes the special challenges facing older youth re-entering communities from JJC commitments and the need to develop intensive educational programs that can address their particular needs.
