Extractions: Citizens Bank New Hampshire honors Shaker Road School with business award Manchester, NH (October 6, 2004) - Citizens Bank and the New Hampshire Business Review have honored Shaker Road School in Concord with the "Not Your Typical Business Award." This award, which is presented monthly, recognizes New Hampshire businesses that have demonstrated leadership in their commitment to their customers, colleagues and community. Shaker Road is an independent school offering education to over 300 students as young as 3 years old up through the ninth grade. Located in Concord, its 63-acre campus is dotted with classrooms, playgrounds, athletic fields, a library, a media center, swimming pools, a greenhouse and even a golf course. Educators Doug and Patti Hicks founded Shaker Road School in 1979 as a child-care center. A quarter-century later, they have watched their "community of learning" grow from a student population of six children (including two of their own) to what has become one of the state's most innovative private schools. The commitment shown to their customers - the students and their families - is just one reason why Shaker Road was chosen for this award. In addition to providing an excellent education, the school strives to meet the extended child care needs of today's busy, working families. "Our mission is to serve families," Doug Hicks says, adding that the school's daylong, year-round, activity-filled schedule is a major benefit to working parents. Children can be dropped off as early as 6:30 a.m. and can stay until 6 p.m. And when the school year ends, they can attend "Camp Shaker" throughout the summer months.

Extractions: The School Library Media Center You may remember it simply as the school library, the place you visited between classes to read, do homework or conduct research for a term paper. But the school library of yesterday has given way to a new and exciting place the school library media center, where information is available in a wide variety of formats, both print and electronic; where materials and activities are coordinated with classroom assignments; and where students learn information skills that prepare them to live and work in the 21st century. Today's school library media program plays an integral role in educating children for the future. It is where students learn to find, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas skills they will need as adults to live and work in an information-based society. Besides serving as independent learning centers, many centers have programs that are directly integrated into the school curriculum. Some examples: The DeKalb County (Ga.) School System provides digital editing and multimedia equipment to all 118 of its library media centers and utilizes a Curriculum Design Blueprint that integrates resource-based teaching and information literacy skills into the curriculum.

Training Section Comprehensive Emergency Management Planning for Schools (CEMPS) CEMPS hasreceived media attention from new hampshire and national news organizations. http://www.nhoem.state.nh.us/Training/training.asp
Extractions: CEMPS Comprehensive Emergency Management Planning for Schools (CEMPS) is a program offered to New Hampshire school districts aimed at providing emergency planning to protect school children and adult personnel during natural and manmade disasters. Providing protection for schools has received a great deal of attention from the news media and public officials at all levels in recent years because of a number of high visibility incidents of school violence. CEMPS was actually started well before those events occurred and it is designed to provide an all-hazards emergency plan that would be put in operation no matter what the emergency. CEMPS is a process that assists in the development of workable, user-friendly emergency management plans for schools. A school district's plan is developed by its own personnel in cooperation with local first responders and the N.H. Office of Emergency Management. That is, the plan is developed by the people who will carry it out when the need arises.
