In 1763 a decision in New York's favor was rendered, but it was difficult to enforce. The speculators, who had the grants, and the settlers who came in under them, opposed the New York claims. The Green Mountain Boys were organized, with resistance led by Ethan Allen . Violence resulted, and in 1777 the New Hampshire Grants declared themselves a republic (New Connecticut), independent of both New York and New Hampshire; they entered the Union in 1971 under the name of Vermont.

Maptech: Historical Topographic Maps USGS topographic maps includes complete geographical coverage of new England, new York, For example, in the 15minute map series for new hampshire, http://historical.maptech.com/historic.cfm
Extractions: Historic Topographic Maps home The United States Geological Survey was established on March 3, 1879 and began its topographic atlas of the United States in 1882. The oldest map in this online collection dates from 1885 and covers part of Washington, D.C. This online collection of over 2000 USGS topographic maps includes complete geographical coverage of New England, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland from the 1890s to 1950s. It is slowly being expanded as time permits, through volunteer efforts. Most of the states of Virginia, West Virginia and Ohio are now covered. Current USGS topographic maps are readily available in paper form direct from USGS, on CD-ROM from companies such as Maptech with their Terrain Navigator software series, and on the Internet with free services such as Maptech's MapServer . While current USGS topographic maps are also often available in larger public libraries, historic maps are usually more difficult to find, which is why this web site was created. Quadrangles home U.S. Geological Survey maps are published in increments of longitude and latitude. In the 15-minute map series, each individual map covers a rectangular area of 15 minutes. (For example, the Concord, New Hampshire quadrangle has a southern boundary of 43 degrees minutes and a northern boundary of 43 degrees 15 minutes.) Other map series include 7.5- and 30-minute quadrangles, each drawn at different map scales.
