High Mowing School: Home Wilton, new hampshire, USA Upper School only (classes 9 to 12). A Waldorf boarding High School located in Wilton new hampshire. http://www.highmowing.org/
Extractions: Boarding Curriculum Campus Tour Directions ... H igh Mowing is the oldest Waldorf high school in North America and the only one to offer a boarding program. In 1942, Mrs. Beulah Emmet, inspired by the work and thought of Rudolf Steiner, converted her family country home into a Waldorf high school. The old and charming hilltop farm ideally suited the warm, home-like atmosphere she sought for her students, and it even suggested the schools name (mowing is an old New England term for "hayfield"). S ince that time, High Mowing has offered teenagers the unique combination of Waldorf education and community living (9th to 12th Grade). In the 1970s, the school formed a partnership with Pine Hill Waldorf School (an elementary Waldorf school now located just across the road) to offer a complete K-12 Waldorf program in Wilton, New Hampshire. Director The Hunter School is a private day and boarding school for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and/or related conditions. In its introduction, Thom Hartman states, "This book is the first I know of to present the idea that ADD is not always a disorder but instead may be a trait of personality and metabolism; that ADD comes from a specific evolutionary need in the history of humankind; that ADD can actually be an advantage (depending on the circumstances); and that, through an understanding of the mechanism which led to ADD's presence in our gene pool, we can recreate our schools and workplaces to not only accommodate ADD individuals, but allow them to again become the powers behind the cultural, political, and scientific change which they so often historically represented."

The eight samplers illustrated in this article belong to a group of ten, all executed in the first decade of the nineteenth century, judging be the dates stitched into them by their makers.(1) Three of the young needleworkers (see Pls. IV, V) identify Dover, New Hampshire, as the place where they stitched their samplers, and the only documented teacher of needlework in Dover at the time was Sophia Cushing Hayes Wyatt (1781-1857). It appears that the samplers were all made under her tutelage at the part-time and full-time girl's schools she operated on and off in Dover at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Sophia Cushing, born in Dover, was the daughter of Elizabeth Cushing (1747-1817), a Quaker who never married. Sophia's grandfather was the Reverend Jonathan Cushing, a prominent Dover minister.(2) According to her autobiography, Sophia attended two of the best public schools in the country: one kept by the Reverend William Stone, and the other by the Reverend Jesse Appleton, both in Dover,(3) and both open to all pupils regardless of age, sex, means, or religion.

Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots.
