Aboriginal peoples have lived in what is now Newfoundland and Labrador for at least 9000 years. The Inuit, Innu, and Micmac people who live here today are the descendants of these first peoples. The earliest Europeans to discover North America were Viking seafarers who landed at L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland, around the year 1000 CE. The Vikings set up dwellings, workshops and an iron-working smithy, but apparently decided against permanent settlement. In 1497 John Cabot, an Italian explorer, was commissioned by King Henry VII of England to set sail for the newly discovered lands of the west. He landed in present-day Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland, and laid claim to the "new found land" on behalf of England. England granted Newfoundland representative government in 1832, and complete self- government in 1855. In 1934, Newfoundland converted to a commission government, administered by Newfoundland and English commissioners working under an English governor. Newfoundland and Labrador became Canada's tenth province in 1949.

The region offers a wide variety of touring experiences for todays discriminating traveler, and appeals to those who seek to connect to the real and the unspoiled. The 17-kilometre wide Strait of Belle Isle separates the island of Newfoundland from Labrador. Bordering on the Canadian province of Quebec, Labrador remains a vast, pristine wilderness where the northern lights shine over the largest caribou herd in the world. It is the sea that defines the more populous Newfoundland. An underwater continental shelf that stretches out hundreds of miles from shore includes the Grand Banks, renowned for its fish stocks. Over these shallows wash the nutrient rich cold waters of the southward moving Labrador current, bringing with it Arctic sea ice and huge icebergs. From the south the Gulf Stream brings warm water from the Caribbean. The mixing of these currents creates an environment where marine life flourishes. This abundant sea life provides food for millions of seabirds to raise their young, and also entices whales to tarry awhile on their way to summer feeding grounds in the Arctic. Newfoundland and Labrador has more than 60 major seabird colonies. The most accessible is at Cape St. Marys on the Avalon Peninsula where thousands of Northern Gannets nest atop a sea stack at eye level just 50 feet from the cliff top. Gannets and other birds feed on tiny capelin, sand lance and other fish.

Extractions: The Provincial Emergency Measures Program is responsible for the development and maintenance of effective provincial emergency preparedness, response and recovery measures with a view to mitigating the human suffering and loss of property caused by actual or imminent emergencies and disasters in Newfoundland and Labrador. Emergency Measures is the agency of Government that is responsible for dealing with any large scale emergency or disaster occurring in and for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Using its legislative support, The Emergency Measures Act, it has the responsibility to co-ordinate and/or manage an emergency situation. It is the only agency that is authorized to control and coordinate the activities of all Police, Fire, Health, Social Services, and other service in the area, either municipal or provincial, and to engage civilian personnel to assist in these services. The general objective of the current emergency policy is to contribute to raising the standard of emergency preparedness throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to the point where all types of emergencies/disasters can be met with a prompt and effective response. In order to accomplish this, Emergency Measures is actively involved in joint contingency planning with all levels of government, private sector and the civilian population.

JOHN'S, NL, Dec. 15 - Today the region's foremost information and communications technology company, Aliant, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced details of a $1.5 million development initiative - Nearshore Atlantic - to aggressively establish the Province as a recognized centre for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) development. This initiative is being done in collaboration with Nati to bring new ICT work to the Province that will benefit the local ICT industry. The term of the agreement is three years and is being led by a newly hired Director, Fiona Langer. Nearshore Atlantic ( www.nearshoreatlantic.com ) is looking at ICT business opportunities in geographies close to the Newfoundland and Labrador markets namely in areas of the US, Western Europe and some Canadian jurisdictions. The work will focus on growing business and creating economic wealth within the ICT sector of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador by building upon the well-established ICT sector of the Province. In addition it also will be modeled under a business attraction strategy to attract non NL based companies into the province to conduct software related work for international markets.
