Fact Sheets e-Business and Wireless Systems Over the past decade, New Brunswick and Cape Breton have developed an active e-business/information technology sector. Building on the momentum of previous experience in e-commerce, distance education, telemedicine and connected communities, there is an excellent infrastructure for research and a natural opportunity to build a dynamic technology cluster. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Sept. 2000 Mar. 2003 A similar Round Table had been held in Sydney for the Cape Breton Wireless Systems initiative in September 2000. NRC's home on the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB) campus has been in the Technology Enterprise Centre, for which major renovations were announced in September 2002. NRC has also set up an internship program that allows up to 10 or more graduates to gain vital experience in research labs. The interns participate in joint projects undertaken by NRC and local high-tech companies. In New Brunswick, NRC is now recognized as an active catalyst for cluster growth. The NRC Institute for Information Technology (NRC-IIT) has grown from one site in Ottawa to four other centres in Atlantic Canada.

Provincial web site An agreement for the implementation of the Infrastructure Canada-New Brunswick Program was signed between the federal and provincial governments on October 4 th , 2000. The agreement was announced in a joint news release issued in Fredericton, where the formal signing took place. In addition to the information about the Infrastructure Canada Program (ICP) common to all provinces and territories provided on the About the ICP section, there are some aspects of the Infrastructure Canada-New Brunswick Program that are unique: Program Details Funding The ICP allocation to New Brunswick is $54.445 million. With contributions from our provincial and municipal partners, the total infrastructure investment in New Brunswick will be $163.335 million. ICP funds were allocated according to a formula that gives equal weight to population and unemployment, a formula the Government of Canada believes takes into account the economic status and investment needs of all regions. On average, the federal government contributes one-third of the cost of municipal infrastructure projects. The provincial and municipal governments contribute the remaining funds, and in some instances, there may be private sector investment as well.

It is rectangular in shape, extending 322 kilometres north to south and 242 kilometres east to west. New Brunswick has a land mass of 73 500 km2, 85 percent of which is forest. The northern part of the province is quite mountainous, the tallest peak being Mount Carleton at 820 metres high. The interior consists mainly of a rolling plateau, flatter in the east and more hilly in the southeast. The main rivers are the Miramichi, Nepisguit, Restigouche and Saint John. Known as "oa-lus-tuk" or "beautiful river" to the Aboriginal people, the Saint John waters the fertile lands of the western part of the province over a distance of 725 kilometres. Downstream, in the Madawaska area, it traces a natural boundary between Canada and the state of Maine. Twice a day, with the rising tide of the Atlantic Ocean, 100 billion tonnes of water stream past a rocky headland in the Bay of Fundy. The current created is practically equal to the flow of all the world's rivers over a 24-hour period. The eastern end of the Bay has tides of nearly 15 metres, the highest in the world, sufficient to completely submerge a four-storey building. The existence of New Brunswick was known to the Europeans as early as the 1400s, when intrepid Basque fishermen plied their trade off Miscou in the northeast region of the province. At that time, the region was inhabited by the Malecite and Micmac peoples. The Micmacs were the first to receive Samuel de Champlain and the French when they landed in New Brunswick in 1604. The Aboriginal people established good relations with the French from the outset, helping the French settlers, known as Acadians, to adapt to their new country and taking part in the French attacks on New England.
