Thirteen participants in the 2005 Invent Iowa State Invention Convention, held at Iowa State University in April, were selected to showcase their inventions in the UI's state fair booth in the Varied Industries Building. The inventions were selected as representative examples of the many imaginative, inspired and often very useful items generated by bright minds across Iowa and presented annually at the annual Invention Conventions. The Invention Convention, sponsored by the UI College of Education's Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development and the UI and ISU Colleges of Engineering, alternates between the two campuses each year. This year's Invention Convention brought together 326 inventors and co-inventors of 246 inventions representing 141 Iowa cities and towns. To reach the state level, students are encouraged to develop inventions that meet the general requirements for a patent in the United States: they must be "new, useful and non-obvious." Students also are encouraged to keep journals chronicling their inventions' development from concept to completion.
