In the fall of 1849 Dr. A.B. Caldwell opened a general store and the mining camp started resembling a town. The town became Caldwell's Upper Store. In 1850, the town was looking more like a city, with a cities' problems. The citizens, under Mexican law, elected a mayor, or "Alcalde," to establish and keep order. After the initial gold rush, merchants, bankers and the like came to Nevada City and built homes in the style of the day. This was during the reign of Queen Victoria, and that style of architecture became known as "Victorian". Colonial, Greek Revival, and "California Gothic" styles of architecture are well represented here as well. Most of Nevada City burned to the ground on several occasions. Two of the most interesting buildings in the downtown area are fire houses that were built with more than utilitarian style. This also accounts for the prevalance of brick buildings featuring iron shutters.

It supports threatened fish and hundreds of thousands of breeding and migrating water birds, including spring and fall visits from 1,400 common loons - the largest known congregation west of the Mississippi. Walker Lake's existence spans millions of years. Along with Pyramid Lake in northwest Nevada and Mono Lake in eastern California, Walker is a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Lahontan, which covered much of central and northern Nevada during the last Ice Age. As the climate dried, Lake Lahontan receded and many closed valleys became isolated dry lake beds. The Walker River is one of three major rivers draining the east slopes of the Sierra Nevada, supporting riparian, wetland and desert lake ecosystems.

Extractions: Nevada Day The Story Behind Nevada Day Carson City's Nevada Day parade and celebration is among the oldest ongoing parade activities held in the Silver State, and with the exception of Hawaii and West Virginia, is the only admission day activity of its kind in the country. Regarding the inaugural parade in 1938, the Daily Appeal claimed the event was "Nevada's largest and best Admission Day Celebration in the history of the state." Celebrating Nevada Day in Carson City is a long time-honored tradition, but the history on commemorating our statehood predates the 1938 parade by more than 60 years. The first observance of Nevada's admission to the Union in 1864 appears to have been initiated on the Comstock by the Pacific Coast Pioneer society in the 1870's. Journalist Alfred Doten of the Gold Hill news mentions a "grand celebration" in 1873 in his diaries. The Pioneer society held a sumptuous banquest on October 31, 1889, in honor of Nevada's 25th anniversary as the 36th state. There may have been other commemorative events outside the Comstock but the state of Nevada did not officially recognize its birthday until two years later. The state legislature passes a bill in 1933, introduced by Senator Ira L. Winter of Carson City, which designated October 31st as "Nevada Day" and a discretionary state holiday. The new law

They successfully farmed the area by diverting water from the creek.
