Flexible Scheduling Helps Students: "To promote students achievement of learning goals, connections between content learning and information skills must be interwoven into every level of student learning. Students need many carefully planned opportunities to access, use, and evaluate information in all subject areas and in formats." Information Power 1998 Flexible Scheduling Benefits Teachers: "Information-based learning is essential to a productive and satisfying life, and the library media program will continue to have a critical responsibility for preparing students to participate fully in the global learning community." Many children are now being cared for by family, friends, and neighbors in home settings. Family, friend, and neighbor care is also known as "kith and kin" care or "informal care," and can differ from the care provided in professional center-based and family child care settings. Here are some resources on the topic The Midwest Child Care Research Project has partnered with the Nebraska Health and Human Services and Nebraska Department of Education and several other Nebraska organizations to pilot a Quality Rating System, scheduled to begin October, 2005. Child care providers in Lincoln/Lancaster County (an urban area) and a 10-county area in Northeast Nebraska (a rural area) in centers and homes are encouraged to participate. Extractions: School-Age Child Care: Resources for Out-of-School Time Programming All local communities throughout Nebraska owe it to the children of their community to provide safe, educational, and fun places to spend hours outside of school time. School-age programs are a critical link to helping children become successful adults by keeping children safe and by providing supervised, structured activity as well as educational tutoring. Along with traditional before-and-after-school programs, some communities in Nebraska are starting community learning centers. A community school is a place where an integrated focus on academics, services, supports and opportunities leads to improved student learning, stronger families, and healthier communities. If your community does not have a program for out-of-school time, don't give up! Residents and parents in partnership with schools and other organizations have created many after school programs. If you are looking for information on how to start a school-age program, how to fund a program, or how to use criteria for developing and implementing a high quality program, the Early Childhood Training Center has resources that may help you find the answers to your questions. Our media collection has books to help you with activities for the children as well as ideas for staff development and much more.
