Extractions: Ashland is a city located in Saunders County, Nebraska . As of the census, the city had a total population of 2,262. edit Ashland is located at the site of a low-water limestone ledge forming the bottom of Salt Creek, an otherwise mud-bottomed waterway that was a formidable obstacle for wagon trains on the great westward migrations of the late 1840s and 1850s. The Ox-Bow Trail, a variant route of the Oregon Trail, ran from Nebraska City on the Missouri to Fort Kearny on the Platte, where it joined the main body of the Oregon Trail. The limestone bottom of the Salt at Ashland was a far superior crossing of that stream than any other, and a town, Saline Ford, was born. Saline Ford was a trading post, and exemplified the 'wild west.' Proper families prospered by the trade at the crossing, but didn't want to live there. So up on a hill overlooking the Salt Valley, the village of Flora City was born. These twin towns later were incorporated as Ashland. Early morning, Downtown Ashland

If you can come out of this course with an understanding of what a Nebraskan is . . . and why (s )he is that way because of his/her inhabiting Nebraska , then you will have achieved something of great importance. Have Nebraskans formed an identity at any time during their modern existence in this territory? Has that identity changed? Into what? When? Why? These questions are always just swimming around in my head . . . begging for answers. It is my intention that we will get much closer to answering these questions by the end of this course. Because this is not an exercise for the faint of heart, I need you to devote a great deal of energy and passion to this cause . . . I will, in fact, attempt to measure your commitment; it will inevitably reveal itself in the quality of your musings and reflections, of which we will do a great deal this semester.
