Extractions: The Mind of a Child or Teen Is a Terrible Thing to Waste: Pre-K to 12 Educational Resources A note for parents: While this section is intended primarily for use by children and teens, there are many resources in this section that parents may find helpful in selecting activities to do with their children, particularly with children who do not yet read. Also, before allowing children to surf the Net on their own, children need to be instructed about possible hazards of the Internet. For example, some of these sites included products for sale, opportunities for chatting with other young people, and forms to fill out and submit. Families need to set up their own policies in these matters, but it might be best to check out some of the guides on safely surfing the Internet to set up family guidelines. This warning is not intended to frighten anyone, simply to make the Internet experience more enjoyable. Happy surfing! Please note: In an attempt to make the length of this page a little more manageable, I eliminated many of the sites most valuable to teachers and school library media specialists like myself in favor of those more useful to students and parents. There are many terrific links pages specifically created for educators, but if people miss the educator links here previously, please let me know, and I will create a new page as soon as possible. A. Extractions: Community Technology Centers: Collaborations That Work There are well over 2,000 Community Technology Centers (CTCs) and related community technology projects that provide a range of technology services to low-income, minority, and hard-to-serve populations across America. Often a community technology effort does not carry the label of a CTC, even though they provide CTC-type services in urban and rural communities. Libraries, schools, and nonprofit organizations that play a key role in our communities coordinate many community technology efforts. Often the building which houses a community technology center serves as the focal point of community activity, a center for learning and workforce preparedness, a showcase of community collaborations among businesses, government and nonprofit and civic organizations. The number of new programs has been increasing exponentially as communities recognize that access to technology is a key to economic empowerment, workforce competitiveness, and community building.

HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW, the most widely read of all the American poets and the one that has the closest hold upon the hearts of the American people, was born in Portland, Maine, February 27, 1807. His father, a graduate of Harvard College, was a leading lawyer in the city. Both parents were of the best English stock and descendants of the early settlers in New England. On his mother's side, the poet traced his ancestry to John Alden, whose peculiar courtship of the Plymouth maid, Priscilla, he was to celebrate in one of his happiest poems. It was from his mother, a lover of nature and of poetry, that Longfellow inherited his romantic taste and his literary ambition. Youth.

Extractions: Daily Schedule Math Computer Science ... Calendar English The central focus of our English curriculum is to heighten students' command of and sensitivity to language and literature. In pursuance of this goal, students are encouraged to expand their awareness of, respect for, and originality in language, both written and spoken, through a systematic study of vocabulary, grammar and syntax, works of literature, composition, literary analysis and criticism. In view of the stress placed on writing in our curriculum, the teaching load of our English faculty is reduced by one class, thus providing a free period to meet individually with students. This reduction also gives the extra time necessary to evaluate clearly and make in-depth comments on all written assignments. Much emphasis is also placed on reading and research. The English Department feels that we must, as E.M. Forster admonishes, "only connect;" connections are stressed between form and content, themes and historical context, and the specific genre and the individual student.
