Extractions: Welcome to the School Administrators of Montana and the Montana Council of Administrators of Special Education (MCASE) website. Our organization is committed to providing the best possible services to students with disabilities in Montana schools through leadership on issues regarding the education of students with disabilities, professional development of all educators involved in meeting the needs of students with disabilities, and collegial support for all those who share our mission. Last year we were eager to see what changes in special education would be brought by the reauthorization of IDEA. Now we are moving in the direction of understanding and implementing the changes enacted with the passage of IDEA 2004, all of which take effect July1. There are some exciting possibilities as we head into the new school year, most notable is the concept of Response to Intervention, which gives schools the opportunity to serve students for a significant period of time prior to identification as disabled. With a focus on early intervention in the primary grades, our efforts should ultimately reduce the number of students identified as learning disabled.
