The imprints of Vitis teutonica vine leaves near the Naslavcia village in the north of Moldova, prove that grapes have grown here approximately 6 to 25 million years ago. The size of the grape seed imprints found near the Varvarovca village which date to 2800 BC, prove that, at that time, the grapes were already cultivated. The grape-growing and winemaking in the area between the Nistru and Prut rivers, which began 4000-5000 years ago, had periods of rises and falls but has survived through all the changing social and economic formations. At the end of the 3rd century B.C., links between the local population and the Greeks were established. Only after the formation of the Moldovan feudal state in the 14th century did the grape-growing begin to develop. It flourished in the 15th century during the kingdom of Stefan cel Mare, who was promoting the import of planting material of high quality varieties from other countries and the improvement of the quality of the wine. In the 300 years under the Turkish Ottoman Empire, Moldova saw a big decline in grape-growing, since winemaking was forbidden by law.

Another variant is that was named by a Hungarian noble after a river. Moldova's Latin origins can be traced to the period of Roman occupation of nearby Dacia (in present-day Romania Bulgaria , and Serbia ), ca. A.D. , when a culture was formed from the intermingling of Roman colonists and the local population. After the overextended Roman Empire withdrew its troops from the region in A.D. , a number of groups passed (often violently) through the area, including the Huns , the Ostrogoths , and the Slavic Antes . The Bulgarians , the Magyars , the Pechenegs , and the Golden Horde (Mongols) also held sway temporarily. In the 13th century , the Kingdom of Hungary expanded into the area and established a line of fortifications in Moldova near the Siret River (in present-day Romania) and beyond. The region came under Hungarian suzerainty until an independent Moldovan principality was established by Prince Bogdan in

Moldova - HISTORY THE history OF THE REPUBLIC OF moldova is the history of two different To a great extent, moldova s history has been shaped by the foreigners who came http://countrystudies.us/moldova/2.htm
Extractions: HISTORY Moldova Table of Contents THE HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA is the history of two different regions that have been joined into one country, but not into one nation: Bessarabia and Transnistria. Bessarabia, the land between the Prut and Nistru rivers, is predominantly ethnic Romanian in population and constitutes the eastern half of a region historically known as Moldova or Moldavia (the Soviet-era Russian name). Transnistria is the Romanian-language name for the land on the east bank of the Nistru River; the majority of the population there is Slavicethnic Ukrainians and Russians although Romanians are the single largest ethnic group there. To a great extent, Moldova's history has been shaped by the foreigners who came to stay and by those who merely passed through, including Greek colonists, invading Turks and Tatars, officials of the Russian Empire, German and Bulgarian colonists, communist apparatchiks from the Soviet Union, soldiers from Nazi Germany, Romanian conationalists, and twentieth-century Russian and Ukrainian immigrants. Each group has left its own legacy, sometimes cultural and sometimes political, and often unwelcome. Moldova's communist overlords, the most recent "foreigners," created the public life that exists in Moldova today. Independence has brought about changes in this public life, but often only on the surface. What further changes Moldova makes will depend partly on how much time it has before the next group of "foreigners" comes to call.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. In July 2001, the United States Congress established a grant program called the "Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation." Our Congress believes, as I do, that cultural preservation offers us an opportunity to show a different face of America to other countries, one that is non-commercial, non-political, and non-military. The Splendid Visitors Center you see before you today is the result of our Embassys first project under this program, and we hope that it will help many more people to learn from and enjoy the unique historical, cultural, and geological characteristics of Orheiul Vechi. As citizens of the world, we share a common responsibility to preserve artistic, cultural, historic, and natural wonders for future generations, and for me, helping to celebrate the cultural treasures of Moldova has been one of the most rewarding parts of my job here. The first time I visited Orheiul Vechi, I was struck by the fascinating meeting of so many points of interest - archaeological, historic, cultural, and natural that coexist here, but I felt that more was needed to help the visitors who did come to understand and appreciate how special this area is, and to reach out and draw in more visitors. The center we are opening today is designed to do just that. It should help increase awareness of Moldovas rich history among Moldovans, and attract more tourists from outside Moldova. History and culture are treasures that become more valuable when they are shared; Moldova has become richer today
