Having lost his horse during the exchange, he is forced to swim the width of a river and run the remaining miles to his post. Inspired by such heroic displays of skill and strength and building on the ancient Greek pentathlon, modern Olympic founder Baron Pierre de Coubertin had an idea: parlay the physical demands of a cavalry officer into a new competition in which its contenders must excel in a combination of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, equestrian show jumping, and cross-country running. These modern warriors, he surmised, would be the finest athletes of the Games. Millions of spectators of the 2004 summer Olympic Games in Athens this August will be unaware that the pentathlon might have been doomed, if not for the actions of Robert Marbut Jr. '82, chair of the United States Olympic Committee's National Governing Bodies Council, which coordinates the activities of all 45 Summer Olympic, Winter Olympic, and Pan American sports.

Features NEWS POLL Does Cian O'Connor's gold for Ireland in the show jumping final make up for an otherwise disappointing Irish team performance? Yes No Ancient Games Compiled by Ian O'Riordan 1. Introduction Despite many popular misconceptions, very few of the events featured in the modern Olympic Games can be traced directly to the ancient Olympiad. Some of the ancient events, such as trumpeting, have, thankfully, been long since forgotten, while others, such as the pankration, a vicious combat sport, were, mercifully, never revived. Even the oldest events such as the javelin, the discus and wrestling originally featured only as part of the pentathlon. And many of the so-called traditional events were added much more recently. Graeco-Roman wrestling, for example, in fact originated in 19th-century France, and was seen as a reincarnation of ancient Greek and Roman wrestling. Up until 200 BC various sports were added to the Games to the point where the Olympiad consisted, in its final form, of 16 events. The ancient Games, from their foundation in 776 BC to their demise in AD 393, lasted 1,169 years. This means 292 Olympiads were staged.

Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Extractions: MODERN PENTATHLON REPORT Back to NEWS Monday, October 2 Cook seeking wider horizons for pentathlon From David Powell in Sydney Steph Cook, who became the first womens Olympic champion of her sport here yesterday, will seek to add the second most important title to her laurels next July when the world championships are staged at Millfield, close to the high performance centre in Bath where she prepared for the Games. Kate Allenby, the bronze medal-winner, will join Cook in an attempt to position Britain indisputably as the leading womens nation. In the three years since Cook began to compete internationally, she has accumulated an impressive collection of gold, silver and bronze medals from world team and team relay championships. Small wonder that Allenby, who helped to campaign for women modern pentathletes to be admitted to the Olympics 88 years after the men were added to the programme, is now calling for a team event to be put on the schedule for Athens in 2004. The Olympic programme covered individual events only, whereas world championships incorporate team and team relay events. The world championships are in Britain next year, so we have something to prove, Allenby said. We want to see a team event in the next Olympics because we have five girls in the top 20 in the world at the moment. Based on rankings, Georgina Harland was worth one of the 24 places in the womens Olympic field here, but each country was restricted to two competitors. However, Harland was brought here for experience and as a training partner for Cook and Allenby.

He was first greeted by an enemy soldier with his sword drawn. The two dueled. The French officer won the duel and continued on his horse until it was shot out from under him. He fired a shot with his pistol and killed the enemy but his horse didn't make it. He swam across a river and ran the rest of the way to deliver his message.
