Extractions: The Missouri Council on Economic Education (MCEE) was invited to speak at the signing of economic education legislation by Missouri Governor Bob Holden. The Governor is a member of the MCEE Advisory Council and a former Trustee. The MCEE authored the legislation which calls for a major study of economic and personal finance education in the state for K-12 students. Passed by the Missouri House 130 - 11 and by the Senate 30 - 0, the bill is the result of new collaboration between many groups promoting economic and/or financial education. Governor Holden Signs Economic Literacy Bill In January, the Missouri Coalition for Economic and Financial Literacy was formed with about twenty organizations participating in a meeting called by the Missouri Bankers Association. A legislative subcommittee led by the MCEE was charged with drafting legislation as requested by participating legislators. The result was a bill that asks for recommendations on changing school funding, amount of economics and personal finance included in the curriculum, teacher training, teacher certification, testing, and to create an outline of a course required for high school graduation. To date, the MCEE has raised $65,500 of the $100,000 required for the study. Operation Outreach Makes Use of Talented Teachers The Economic Advocate program of the University of Missouri-Kansas City center's Operation Outreach has been functioning at high speed. One of the most rewarding and yet time consuming projects has been a collaborative effort to help edit and support the development of a module written by Jennifer Ernat, Hamilton, MO, to help teachers assess student progress toward the economic content standards of Missouri's statewide assessment. The module is in the field testing stage now and will eventually be posted on the Operation Outreach website at
