Extractions: Hannibal, Mo. Hannibal-LaGrange College recently received the results of the Missouri teacher certification tests for the 1999-2000 academic year. According to Vice President of Academic Affairs Garry Breland, for the thirty-five HLG students who took the exams, the pass rate was 95%. "The Teacher Education Program at Hannibal-LaGrange College has a successful track record and plays an important part in providing qualified teachers to area schools," said Breland. Required for state licensure, the tests measure professional knowledge, content in the area of specialization and performance assessments. Passing scores are set by the state to establish minimum competency levels. Title II amendments to the Higher Education Act, enacted to address the quality of teacher preparation, required reporting on teacher preparation and licensing by institutions and states. The State Board of Education will report the test results to the U.S. Department of Education by early October. Since test requirements and pass rates vary from state to state, the institutional pass rates cannot be compared between states. Hannibal-LaGrange College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association. The Teacher Education Program is approved by the Missouri State Board of Education and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for Missouri certification in the following areas: early childhood education, elementary education, middle school endorsement, and secondary education.

Teacher Certification In 2001, all missouri higher education institutions combined graduated Last year more than 400 jobs were posted for mathematics teachers in missouri. http://www.teachmathmissouri.org/teacher/letter.htm
Extractions: January 15, 2002 Dear Missouri Mathematics Educator: Greetings from mathematics and mathematics education faculty of institutions of higher education throughout Missouri! This letter is a request for your assistance. The teaching profession has reached a time of critical shortage. Many current teachers are reaching retirement age, and we see fewer certificates issued to new educators every year. Mathematics education is among the areas hardest hit by this shortage. In 2001, all Missouri higher education institutions combined graduated less than 100 middle and/or secondary mathematics teacher candidates. Last year more than 400 jobs were posted for mathematics teachers in Missouri. We know one of the strongest factors influencing young people to become a teacher is the encouragement of teachers they had in elementary, middle and secondary school. As a teacher, you are in a unique position to inform them about teaching as a career-its rewards as well as its challenges. We hope this letter will be the first step in an ongoing effort to encourage high school students with solid skills in mathematics to consider mathematics teaching as a career. Thanks for your help in spreading the word. If you have any questions about this request, or any suggestions for increasing interest in a career as a mathematics teacher, please let us know.
