We first made history in 1902, when the Hickman Mills area schools became the first Consolidated School District in the state of Missouri. Over the past 100 years, the district has grown from less than 100 students to an enrollment today of 7,047 students. Each of the district's schools strives for academic excellence. The schools include: eight elementary schools, two middle schools, two senior high schools, two special schools along with a comprehensive gifted program, an early childhood center and an alternative school. The patrons of the community have always strongly supported their schools. Working together with people of diverse backgrounds through various groups and organizations, the school district has been responsive to community needs.

After it was created and given to DESE to disseminate, it was discovered the cost of printing and mailing was prohibitive. In an effort to disseminate the information. the document has been translated into HTML and PDF pages. In the original print format, there were several pages inserted (i.e. ALA, AASL, and DESE documents). It was not possible to "insert" those pages in the process of converting the file to pdf. I have included links to the appropriate Internet pages in the chapters having "insert" messages or place holder pages. Once you access the pdf. pages, you may search for specific information using the "find" command and print all or selected pages. I hope this information is useful to you in your professional life. Extractions: Sept. 20, 2005 Columbia, Mo. (Sept. 20, 2005) - Physicians have known for a long time that vitamin D is essential for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, a condition that affects some 10 million Americans and is likely to develop in 34 million more. Low vitamin D levels can cause the bones to become thin, which in turn increases the risk of fractures. Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiency appears to be quite prevalent precisely among those who have the highest risk of osteoporosis - elderly women, who represent 80 percent of those affected by osteoporosis. Sept. 20, 2005 Columbia, Mo. (Sept. 20, 2005) - Recent recommendations from some European researchers suggest that people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) might benefit from a flu shot. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can lead to the body destroying its own organs. Traditionally, there have been theoretical concerns about giving flu shots to people with lupus for fear the vaccine might trigger a flare-up.
