In the pursuit of new crops, the importance of bibliographic information in the success of such exploration and research cannot be over-emphasized. Since 1862, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), through the National Agricultural Library (NAL), has collected, compiled, and disseminated information relevant to that mission. The National Agricultural Library (NAL), part of the USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS), is the largest agricultural library in the world. NAL has 10 subject specific information centers that provide customized services to the agricultural community and others. All of the Centers can be accessed electronically through the NAL gopher and the NAL homepage (see addresses below). The Centers include: Agricultural Trade and Marketing, Alternative Farming Systems, Animal Welfare, Aquaculture, Biotechnology, Food and Nutrition, Plant Genome Database. Careful sampling of a seed lot is an important step in obtaining a sample which accurately reflects the characteristics of the seed lot. Aside from carefully controlled production and conditioning practices, painstaking sampling is actually the first step in assuring accuracy and precision in seed testing. The purpose of seed testing is to obtain information regarding the planting value of seed in any particular seed lot. For testing to be meaningful, seed samples must be properly collected. Seed tests often generate information which must, by law, appear on the seed label and/or is required for obtaining a phytosanitary certificate. Both the seed producer and the buyer rely on accurate laboratory information. Seed testing laboratories therefore must have modern equipment and well trained analysts. However, seed lot sampling may be beyond the control of the seed analyst conducting tests on the submitted sample. And if the submitted sample is not representative of the seed lot, the laboratory analyses cannot accurately reflect the planting value of that seed. The Seed Lot A seed lot can be defined as a quantity of seed with every portion or every bag uniform within permitted tolerances as to percentage of pure seed, inert matter, other crop seed, germination and dormant seed, weed seed, and rate of occurrence of noxious weed seeds. A quantity of seed which is not uniform within permitted representative tolerances should not be classified as a seed lot. Any variation should be reduced by further conditioning, by mixing, or by separating the quantity in question into two or more uniform lots.

Extractions: You are visitor A separate and distinct area of gardening is that of the Master Gardener - the voluntary arm of the Agricultural Extension Services. As a Past President and member of the Harris County Master Gardener Association (Houston, Texas), I am more familiar with the Texas Master Gardener program but Master Gardening is nationwide in scope and on this page I will be attempting to put it all together. I am often asked the question, "Who and what are 'Master Gardeners'"? The following comments, questions and answers are geared primarily to the Texas Master Gardener Program. However, with slight differences, they also apply to all 50 states since all now have "Master Gardener Programs". They also generally apply in the four Canadian provinces with the program except for the sponsorship of Cooperative Extension agencies. Master Gardeners are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people. What really sets Master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their special training in horticulture. In exchange for their training, persons who become Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers, working through their cooperative Extension office to provide horticulture-related information to their communities.

Extractions: by Jeff Joiner Power lines lay in a twisted mass after Hurrican Ivan smashed the Gulf Coast. Missouri electric co-ops sent more than 100 lineman to assist in power restoration. Even before Ivan made landfall a great tradition was set in motion as dozens of rural electric systems from across the Southeast and Midwest were asked to provide help. Electric cooperative employees from around the United States consider themselves members of a large family and that is never more evident than following devastating ice storms, tornadoes and hurricanes. Cuivre River Electric Cooperative lineman Mark Ziegler works with fellow linemen from the Missouri co-op to replace electric poles and power lines destroyed by Hurricane Ivan along the Gulf Coast of Alabama in September. Missouri electric co-ops sent 101 linemen and 48 trucks to Mississippi and Alabama to help restore power. Though Missouri co-ops often help systems in neighboring states, this was the first hurricane Missouri co-op linemen had ever worked.

Other benefits might include improved recreation facilities, expanded cultural and social opportunities, and pride in one's community, but additional dollars provide the usual appeal for tourism development. In analyzing tourism, we want to know how many visitors will be coming to visit and how much they will spend, so that we can evaluate: It is important to know the cost of a visit to your community relative to the cost of a visit to another community. That cost includes expenditures for food, lodging, travel, and entertainment. Many of these amounts, however, are outside of a community's control (such as the cost of travel to your area). Communities may be able to cooperate to influence the effects of transportation costs on tourists. The Durango/Silverton railroad, for example, is a multi-community effort that enhances regional tourism. Other expenses are those not usually considered in terms of dollars and cents. The most important cost of driving may not be the gasoline or depreciation of the car, but the hours spent.
