Extractions: The Herald Tribune , July 10, 2002 POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. A federal lawsuit on an Arkansas teen-ager's behalf asks a judge to mandate reforms at religious reform schools in Missouri and in Florida at Arcadia, calling their disciplining practices abusive. Missouri's Mountain Park Boarding Academy, according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Cape Girardeau, has subjected students to austere forms of discipline, denied outside communication, limited bathroom breaks and allowed students to sleep as little as five hours a day. The suit is on behalf of 17-year-old Jordan Blair, who attended Mountain Park last year and later transferred to the sister Palm Lane Academy in Florida. Blair, of Alma, Ark., bolted from the Florida school while on an errand with a school worker. Mountain Park is an independent Baptist school enrolling 120 girls and 35 boys near Patterson, Mo., about 110 miles south of St. Louis. Palm Lane, in Arcadia, enrolls about 50 students. Both schools rely on Christian fundamentalist teachings, strict discipline and corporal punishment to work with teen-agers with behavioral problems. Parents pay $14,000 in annual tuition and must commit their children for at least a year. Visits with family members are limited.
Extractions: Jordan Blair has vivid memories of the treatment he and other students received at Mountain Park Baptist Boarding School, a private reform school in Patterson, Mo., north of Poplar Bluff. He says beatings, sleep deprivation and isolation from the outside world were part of the curriculum. "There were other kids getting slammed around, pushed around, real aggressive behavior, said Blair, 19. I would sit there and cry myself to sleep at night knowing that I'm standing there, Im watching this happen and not doing anything about it." Blairs parents sent him to the school in 2001 at age 16 to keep him from having to go to an Arkansas juvenile facility. A judge in Crawford County, Ark., ruled Blair was a juvenile delinquent after convicting him of making a terroristic threat. The former student remembers severe consequences for misbehavior at Mountain Park, which is a mission of the Mountain Park Baptist Church. "We have sleep deprivation, said Blair. Bathroom privileges are extremely limited. You are watched. You have someone who is within what they call slapping distance."

It was determined that Nathan Day will go to trial for allegedly beating a student at his boarding school. The date for arraignment and setting request for trial was set for May 5 in a Pulaski County court. Judge Wiggins will preside. After a civil suit was filed by a former student's mother, Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Laura Kriebs filed child abuse charges against Day in August 2003. Day allegedly beat at least one of his boarders, 16-year-old Christopher Jensen, of Marseilles, Ill. According to investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Day tied Jansen to the back of a lawn mower and an all-terrain vehicle and made him run behind it. The investigators continued that each time Jansen fell he was dragged a few feet before Day would stop. In the petition filed last August by Jansen's mother, Deborah Stedman, there were several incidents of abuse while Jansen was in their care.

Berkeley Parents Network Advice Teenagers > Therapeutic Boarding School for Out of Control Teen March 2005 We have a troubled relative who is 13, and out of control. Her immediate family is from out of the country and is not equipped to deal with her current problems, which range from drug use and stealing to dangerous boyfriends and cutting herself, and regularly dissappearing. We have already called the police and Child Protective Services, there is not much they say they can do at this point and we want to see if we can find a safe place for her to be contained, such as a boarding school that would be affordable and effective for us. Please let us know if you know of any schools, camps, programs, or even group homes that would be a good option for us (she has MediCal, and her mother is on Disability). Many thanks for your help. my advice the the family with the ''out of control teen'' is to look on line for therapeutic boarding schools. ''The ASpen group'' is a great network of schools for troubled kids. My son went to Stone Mountain school for boys. It helped him a lot. They have a school for girls in Arizona i think. Good luck. mom of troubled kid

Published Thursday, November 11, 2004 KIDDER (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 15-year-old boy at a private, military-style boot camp in this northwest Missouri community. Jerry Banks, who runs Thayer Learning Center Boot Camp and Boarding School, said the student died Nov. 3, less than a week after enrolling. The students name was not released. Without elaborating, Jeff Alsup - Caldwell Countys chief sheriffs deputy - said the death was part of an ongoing investigation. Caldwell County Coroner Gary Brown said yesterday he still had not received word on any autopsy findings, including preliminary ones about the cause of death. Banks said he was unaware of the student having any prior medical conditions that required special attention and that the student appeared healthy when he enrolled.

I met my play- mates, who were also wearing their best thick blankets. We showed one another our new beaded moccasins, and the width of the belts that girdled our new dresses. Soon we were being drawn rapidly away by the white mans horses. When I saw the lonely figure of my mother vanish in the distance, a sense of regret settled heavily upon me. I felt suddenly weak, as if I might fall limp to the ground. I was in the hands of strangers whom my mother did not fully trust. I no longer felt free to be myself, or to voice my own feelings. The tears trickled down my cheeks, and I buried my face in the folds of my blanket. Now the first step, parting me from my mother, was taken, and all my belated tears availed nothing. Having driven thirty miles to the ferryboat, we crossed the Missouri in the evening. Then riding again a few miles eastward, we stopped before a massive brick building. I looked at it in amazement, and with a vague misgiving, for in our village I had never seen so large a house. Trembling with fear and distrust of the palefaces, my teeth chattering from the chilly ride, I crept noiselessly in my soft moccasins along the narrow hall, keeping very close to the bare wall. I was as frightened and bewildered as the captured young of a wild creature."
