Extractions: The Library/Media Center has been very busy updating and weeding the library's print and audiovisual collection in order to prepare for the Library/Media Center new on-line computer system. A new addition to the Library/Media Center is the computer lab that consists of 10 Apple computers. Students and staff on a daily basis utilize the computer lab. Students and staff also have an opportunity to access the super highway of information in the Library/Media Center. Students use the internet to search for prospective colleges, e-mail deaf pen pals here in the United States and in other countries. The internet is also used to do research and complete classroom assignments. A new program offered through the Library/Media Center is EBSCOHOST. This program allows students to access databases and newspapers worldwide. Students are taught library skills and how libraries play an important role in the world in which we live. During the After School Program students will be able to: Complete homework assignments

Extractions: Students come to our libraries filled with exciteme nt and the anticipation of finding that perfect book to read. One of the greatest joys of a librarian is connecting children with books that fit their needs and interests. Some readers have specific genres, such as, fantasy, science fiction, or biographies that they love to read. Children with a high interest area in a subject may read every book available on their topic. Do not discourage your child from reading about the same topic, but continue to attempt to discover or develop new interests by reading a variety of genres to your child. Reading can also become a resource for handling some of life's important issues. A book may be needed to help a child deal with the death of a pet or family member, moving to a new location, a health issue, the development of a social skill, or preparation for a visit to another state or country. As a parent, utilize these resources as needed for your child. At what age should children be exposed to reading? It is never too early to begin reading to your child. Pregnant mothers read to their baby in the womb. Small infants develop beginning language skills by listening to familiar voices reading to them. Children who grow up in environments without being read to have lower language development when entering school than children who grow up in homes enriched by reading.

We sat down on the grass and one firefighter climbed the ladder. The ladder was tall because What do you wear on your head? it was next to the the sun. He told us to say ?Spongebob? and then took a picture of us on the grass when he was on the ladder. The ladder came down and it was noisy. We got to drive the truck and Mrs. Signing autographs?! But pre-college students must be in the science education pipeline to maintain a steady and diverse cadre of graduate students in marine-related studies. Sea Grant meets that need well. A look at major meetings, such as the Marine Technology Society's annual conference, will show that Sea Grant educators are in the forefront of hands-on, discovery education in marine sciences for pre-college students and the adults who teach them. Model K-12 Programs Pilot studies in Mississippi supported by Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant established national models for programs that introduce students and teachers to the marine environment and ignite their enthusiasm for science. For example, "Project Marine Discovery" reaches 31,000 students each year with structured field trips and other hands-on marine science programs. The project started as a three-hour field trip program for four school groups at kindergarten through 12th grade levels; it now encompasses a variety of programs run by a corps of professional marine educators and docents for individuals from nursery school to the elderly. The Renew America Foundation selected "Project Marine Discovery" as the nation's top environmental education program in the marine and coastal protection category and gave the program its 1993 National Environmental Achievement Award.
