P1618 When Your Income Drops Once you ve listed your family s resources and potential resources, consider your The Director of Administrative Services, mississippi Public Service http://msucares.com/pubs/publications/p1618.htm
Extractions: In today's economy, many circumstances can lead to a sudden loss of income: loss of job, layoffs or cutbacks, reduced income, loss of support from a spouse, illness, death of a spouse, or divorce. Any of these can be a serious blow to families who are struggling to survive economically in difficult times. Very often the reduction in a family's income is not expected, and the natural reaction is panic. If your family suffers loss of income, try to remain calm and don't waste time and energy blaming yourself. Instead, take control of the situation by doing the best you can with the resources available to your family. This publication offers suggestions for helping you make day-to-day decisions with the money you do have, cope with creditors, maintain control over your finances, and protect your family's welfare. Uncertainty and financial neglect can increase the stress associated with income loss. Take some time, therefore, to study your current financial and family resources. Once you know and understand your situation, you can develop a plan for making the most of family and community resources. A little knowledge goes much further than either imagining the worst or ignoring reality and neglecting bills.

Extractions: When the government of the United States established the Mississippi Territory in 1798, the region around Natchez, which held the bulk of the population, contained about 5,000 whites and 3,500 slaves. Upon entering the union in 1817, Mississippi received slavery as a fully established economic and agricultural system. With the exception of the interior of the Delta region, which remained largely isolated and unsettled until after the Civil War, Mississippi by 1850 had been formed as illustrated by this county map In 1817 Mississippi had a population of about 40,000 whites and 30,000 African Americans. By 1860 African Americans made up 50% of Mississippi's total population of approximately 791,000 people. The African American's place was solidly established, regulated by legal codes and fueled by the institution of slavery. At the time of its admission only the southern quarter and a narrow strip up the Mississippi to the Yazoo were open to legal settlement. The rest of the state was held by the Chickasaw and Choctow nations. By 1835 these Indian nations had lost all claims to their territory. An increasing flow of newcomers to the southern and eastern sections of the territory, mainly from Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and the region above Mobile began to arrive. Those who arrived with sufficient capital quickly took possession of the better dark-soil lands and established plantations, leaving the cheaper uplands for those of lesser means. The French first introduced slavery into the Mississippi territory in the early 1700 and the English, who later settled into the territory, were eager purchasers of slaves.

Extractions: Pioneers Previous Next Mississippi Saints, 1846-1847 (General Information) In the great Mormon migration to western United States there seems to have been three distinct plans, whereby those people who had accepted wholeheartedly the principles of the newly-found religion would begin the long journey to find a haven in the Rocky Mountains in which to establish their homes free from religious persecutions. The vast majority of these converts were to come by land under the able leadership of Brigham Young, upon whom the mantle of the Church had fallen after the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Samuel Brannan was called to take charge of the Saints, some from the Eastern States, sailing on a chartered ship (Brooklyn) which would carry them around the Horn, then on to the present site of San Francisco, California. John Brown was to go into the Southern States and gather those Saints who were ready to leave their all and make the westward journey. He was given instructions to meet President Young in the Indian country. Both Brannan and Brown carried out their part of the master plan and started for the Rocky Mountains in the year 1846; but Brigham Young and the main body of the Saints were detained on the banks of the Missouri River, chiefly because of the call made by the government for five hundred of their young men to be organized into what is known in history as the Mormon Battalion. This chapter has to deal with the southern company who started west in 1846, and failing to meet President Young, journeyed to the old Spanish Fort on the Arkansas River at Pueblo, Colorado where they stayed the winter of 1846?1847. As Mr. Brown and others returned to the South to bring their families we include those people known as Mississippi Saints who came into the Valley in 1847 as well as those who came in 1848.
