Extractions: Approximately 42% of Mississippi's cotton crop was planted to transgenic Bt-varieties in 1996, the first year of commercial availability of this technology. Despite unusually low populations of tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens , the primary target pest of this control tool, overall performance of Bt-cotton was positive. Overall yields were slightly better than conventional varieties and insect control costs were similar. Some Bt-cotton required supplemental foliar treatments to control unusually high populations of bollworms, Helicoverpa zea . However, based on an end of season survey, the number of bollworm/budworm treatments required per field of Bt-cotton (0.33 treatments/field) was considerably less than for conventional cotton (3.05 treatments/field).

Extractions: INTRODUCTION Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), is one of several plant bugs that attack cotton in the U.S. Other members of this group include: western tarnished plant bug(WTPB), Lygus hesperus Knight; cotton fleahopper, Pseudotomoscelis seriatus (Reuter); clouded plant bug, Neurocolpus nubilus (Say); and several less common species. Of these, TPB is the most widely distributed and is the predominant species in the Southeast, Mid-South, and parts of Texas. However, the cotton fleahopper is the more important pest in some areas of Texas. TPB damages cotton primarily by feeding on squares (immature flower buds), which causes abscission. In western production areas, WTPB is the primary plant bug species, although TPB also occurs there. However, the biology of WTPB and the damage it causes are similar to that of TPB, and much of the literature on WTPB has some relevance to TPB. BIOLOGY OF THE TARNISHED PLANT BUG o F to be approximately 33 days, with the approximate number of days required for each stage as follows: egg - 8, nymph - 17, pre-ovipositional period - 8. Fleischer and Gaylor (1988) reported a nymphal development time of 18 days on cotton at 78

Plants were first harvested in 1994. After eight harvest seasons, Bluegold is the highest yielding cultivar, averaging 6.8 T ha , and Toro has the largest berries, averaging 1.81 gm per berry. Bluetta was the earliest cultivar with on average 50% of its yield picked by 16 July and Elliott the latest, with on average 50% of its yield picked by 27 August. As a result of this trial Duke and Nelson have been recommended as early and late-midseason cultivars respectively for Ontario. 2) Chilling Requirement Studies in Blueberries J.M. Spiers , D.A.
