Mississippi State University Bands mississippi State University Bands History of A M. The students of these boarding schools were quite naturally drawn into the college activities and http://www.msstate.edu/org/band/history.html
Extractions: The band required auditions for membership as early as 1911. The first-chair men, together with the director, voted on whether the prospective members played well enough to merit membership in the band. The band had a fraternity-like atmosphere, due in large part to the fact that one section of Old Main was set aside as the band quarters and all bandsmen lived there. A highlight of this period was a Liberty Bonds tour by the band during which they traveled to Niagara Falls by train to raise money for the military effort of World War I. It is known that in 1918 a small group called the "Jazzer-up Jazz Band" was in existence in addition to the regular band. The instrumentation of this 8-piece group included cornet, violin, saxophone, clarinet, flute, trombone, drums, and piano.

Reservation Boarding Schools The reservation boarding school system was a war in disguise, Children at School, 18501930, University Press of mississippi, Jackson, mississippi,1993. http://www.twofrog.com/rezsch.html
Extractions: The Reservation Boarding School System was a war in disguise. It was a war between the United States government and the children of the First People of this land. Its intention was that of any war, elimination of the enemy. The reason this war is difficult to recognize is because it was covered by the attractive patina of a concept called "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was a philosophy by which the white european invader imagined themselves as having a divine right to take possession of all land and its fruits. The reason that the Concept of Manifest Destiny was so effective was because, as it steam rolled across the land, it dragged the masses with it. The hooks that dragged these masses were many and were forged by Christianity and the Christian imprimatur. Although the fuel that energized Manifest Destiny was economic, the inspiration was in its alignment with divine will. This quote from the essay

Skepticism about the program probably is due to perceived ties to Scientology. If it was the Southern Baptists, I don't think it would be scrutinized as much." [Src: St. Petersburg Times, Mar. 30, 2003] Well Justice Babb, ABC TV Wear News in Pensacola, Florida has just published a three part series on alleged child abuse in two Baptist-run boarding schools right down there in Florida. Before linking to the series it might be useful to get some background material on where these schools came from, who accredits them, and Wiley Cameron and Michael Palmerthe Baptist preachers behind them. TACCCA and Wiley Cameron . The Roloff Schools are a string of Christian boarding schools for wayward teens founded by Lester Roloff, a fundamentalist Baptist preacher. In the 1970s Texas health authorities investigated the schools for allegations of whipping, handcuffing and using other abusive tactics on teenagers. The schools protested state scrutiny and the case ended up in the US Supreme Court which ruled that Roloff would have to abide by state licensing laws. So in 1985 two Roloff schools, the Rebekah Home for Girls and Anchor Home for Girls, moved to Missouri. Another school, Mountain Park Baptist Boarding Academy, moved to Missouri from Mississippi in 1987 after a judge ordered teens to be removed. The founder of Mountain Park had been trained by Roloff. Roloff died in a plane crash in 1982 and was replaced by a man named Wiley Cameron.
Extractions: "For a small school, I think it's good," said Jaquitta Ford, 16, an 11th-grader who wants to attend Spelman College in Atlanta and major in computer science. But Ford and her classmates are starting behind the rest of the state. Schools in the Delta, Mississippi's premier farming region, have always been lacking, said Andy Mullins, executive assistant to the University of Mississippi chancellor and former special assistant to three state superintendents of education. The prosperous white families who owned plantations often didn't send children to local public schools. "You had a tradition in the Delta that went back a hundred years of sending kids out of state to boarding schools," he said. "The public schools, in a lot of cases, were viewed as the school for the working man, the common man. For a lot of the poor whites, it was the only place they could go." Until 1970s desegregation, the children of the white "common man" and black "common man" attended classes in different buildings under the umbrella of the same systems. The all-white boards of trustees didn't want to pump a lot of money into the black schools because "you didn't want to educate a good field worker because they'd leave the field," Mullins said.

Extractions: But as Delta educators such as Thomas Edwards know, it's not that simple. At 51, the Delta born, bred and educated Edwards is superintendent of the 2,200-student district in Indianola, the heart of the Delta. He has clean, well-maintained buildings. He has any number of enthusiastic teachers leading students through well-planned lessons. He has students who are quiet, polite and attentive, all impeccably dressed in khaki and navy blue uniforms. The picture of Edwards' hard-working, conscientious students and teachers is hard to reconcile with dismal test scores. Their test scores are too low to meet state accreditation standards, and the district is accredited Level 1, probation. His Sunflower County district is typical of the Delta, where year after year the majority of public schools perform academically at the bottom in the state. "The problems we're talking about today were here 40 years ago," said Reggie Barnes, who after six years as West Tallahatchie schools superintendent is thinking it's about time to change jobs.

This Digest considers issues and possible solutions in dealing with Native language loss, maintenance, and restoration in American Indian and Alaska Native communities, focusing on successful efforts of schools and communities. The preservation and maintenance of the remaining 210 tribal languages (Krauss, 1996) is a major cultural and educational issue in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. The considerable efforts by tribes and schools to ensure language survival attests to the extent of that concern. Richard Littlebear captures the urgency of this problem: Our native languages are in the penultimate moment of their existence in this world. It is the last and only time that we will have the opportunity to save them. We must continue to promote the successful programs throughout Alaska and Indian Country. We must quit endlessly lamenting and continuously cataloguing the causes of language death; instead, we must now deal with these issues by learning from successful language preservation efforts.

Their principal boarding schools are: Baltimore, Maryland; Fort Lee, New Jersey; Quincy, Illinois; Longwood, Chicago; Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. Of their day and high schools the most prominent are at Baltimore, Quincy, Longwood and Chatawa, Mississippi. On 15 December, 1850, the motherhouse was transferred to Milwaukee, with Mother Mary Caroline Friess as vicar-general of the sisters in America. With money donated by King Louis I of Bavaria, a house was bought; this was absorbed later by Notre Dame Convent on St. Mary's Hill. On 2 January, 1851, St. Mary's parish school was opened and St. Mary's Institute for boarding and day pupils soon afterwards. On 31 July, 1876, owing to its growth and extension, the congregation was divided into two provinces; the Western, with motherhouse at Milwaukee; and the Eastern with motherhouse at Baltimore. A second division of the Western province became necessary, and on 19 March, 1895, the Southern province was formed, with its motherhouse in St. Louis.
