Often times, parents turn to military schools as an option to discipline and educate their troubled teenagers. Military schools , which seemed headed for extinction in the late 1960s and early '70s, have seen enrollments increase steadily in recent years. Many military schools are jammed to capacity and sport long waiting lists, as anxious parents scramble for slots.

There's no disputing the U.S. Army is under great pressure to bring in more troops. Observers say fears about being killed in places like Iraq, coupled with the improving economy are likely to blame for recruiting shortfalls. Military officials acknowledge, parents' concerns about the safety of their kids have made enlisting young people harder than it used to be. Nevertheless Department of Defense officials predict they'll be able to turn it around Army enlistments as early as next month.

BRIGADIER-GENERAL BURNSIDE.-[PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRADY.] THE REBEL GENERAL LEE.-[PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRADY.] BRIG.-GEN. BURNSIDE, U.S.A. WE take pleasure in laying before our readers the portrait of BRIGADIER-GENERAL BURNSIDE , United States Army, one of the most gallant officers in the army. General Burnside was born some thirty-seven years ago, in Indiana, and entered the Military Academy at West Point from that State. On graduating he entered the Second Artillery, and served in Captain (now rebel General) Bragg's Company for several years. Some six or seven years since he invented a rifle of peculiar merit, and, resigning his rank in the army (which was that of Lieutenant), devoted his whole time to his invention. At that period it was intended to arm the United States army with some improved weapon, and several inventors competed for the prize. Among others, Burnside's rifle was the subject of many tests, and, in the opinion of good judges, was the best of the many pieces offered to the War Department. The inventor had reason to believe that it would be the one chosen : he had, we understand, assurances to that effect from John B. Floyd, then Secretary of War, and was thus induced to incur heavy outlays to bring his weapon to perfection. But the fact was that Floyd had already made a secret bargain with another inventor to decide in favor of his rifle, on the condition that he, Floyd, was to participate in the profits of the invention.

Extractions: These types of schools all have very strict guidelines that must be followed, no exceptions. Most schools start at 6 am sharp, and all cadets are expected to be in formation fully dressed in their uniforms, with their boots polished. Girls that are in a military school are not allowed to wear bright nail polish, or lots of makeup. Their hair has to be either put up in buns, or cut above the collar of their uniforms. Most military schools will have their cadets called to formation before allowing them to have their meals. Privileges are earned in a military school, if you want something you have to work for it. If a cadet wants to play a video game or go to town on the weekend, they have to earn this privilege. To earn these privileges, a cadet has to earn rank; you give nothing, you get nothing. Military schools do not allow any types of misbehaving, this includes fighting, the use of any drug, or sexual activities either in the school or when on leave to go into town. Being able to work together as a team is a requirement that is necessary from every cadet in a military school.

They threatened to withdraw financial support from our school unless we were forbidden from tabling Wednesday. District Superintendent Gary Prest, also pressured by the American Legion, called Principal Simmons and told him to shut us down. However, we were not about to accept this flagrant violation of our right to free speech or allow the American Legion to blackmail our school. This was not the first time Kennedy students had to battle the administration. In fact, this repression followed months of negotiations to get the right to set up a table. A school district lawyer finally confirmed that we had equal tabling rights as the recruiters. We had set up our first counter-recruitment table last December, right next to the military recruiters. The recruiters' table was abandoned. Meanwhile, our table was mobbed by hundreds of interested students who asked questions, signed petitions, took flyers and pamphlets, and discussed politics. By the end of the day we collected 120 signatures for the petition against recruiters being allowed to invade our school. Over 100 more signed in the following days.
