Extractions: The University of Kansas, Center for Research on Learning, as part of a Research and Demonstration Project with the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, confirmed that adult educators need and desire information and training on how to work with and effectively accommodate adult learners with varying disabilities and on the legal issues involved in doing so. This workshop will focus on the adult educator's role in addressing those needs and specifically address activities appropriate to adult education instructors (as opposed to program directors). Participants will receive a copy of the Accommodations Notebook. This workshop will certify participants to administer, score, and make instructional decisions based upon the CASAS assessments. Participants will learn how to use the ABE and ESL appraisals and diagnostic assessments and other available resources for their programs. The workshop focuses on how to administer and interpret CASAS assessments, how to place learners into appropriate education programs, how to assess learning gains, and how to link assessment to curriculum and instruction. The session covers how to target instruction to CASAS competencies and how to assess, monitor and certify learners progress in reading, math, and listening. At the end of the session, participants complete a certification activity and submit a training verification form that qualifies them to order and implement selected CASAS materials.

Extractions: AND PERFORMANCE MEASURES This chapter examines the educational service delivery and performance measures of the Eagle Pass Independent School District (EPISD) in the following areas: D. COMPENSATORY EDUCATION Accelerated or compensatory education, as defined in Section 42.152(c) of the Texas Education Code, is a program designed to improve the regular education program for students in at-risk situations. Students in any grade are also identified as students in at-risk situations if they are not disabled and reside in a residential placement facility in a district in which the student's parent or legal guardian does not reside, including a detention facility, substance abuse treatment facility, emergency shelter, psychiatric hospital, halfway house or foster family group home. In determining the appropriate accelerated or compensatory program for students, districts must use student performance data from the state assessment instruments and any other achievement tests administered by the district. Based on this needs assessment, district and campus staff should design the appropriate strategies and include them in the campus and/or district improvement plan. By law, the improvement plan must include the comprehensive needs assessment, measurable performance objectives, identified strategies for student improvement, identified resources and staff, specified timelines for monitoring each strategy and formative evaluation criteria. Each district is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the locally-designed program. The purpose of compensatory education is to improve the achievement and reduce the dropout rate of identified students in at-risk situations.
