Extractions: Staff Writer For 15-year-old Raeisha Williams, skipping out at North High School in Minneapolis last year was all too easy, but she'd never try it at her new school in the woods of Mississippi. "Here at Piney Woods, you don't want to skip, because you don't want to get paddled, " she said. Students who don't go to class, won't wear their uniforms or who are insubordinate can get three to five swats with a 3-by-14-inch paddle. "The Bible says, 'Spare the rod, spoil the child,' " said Charles Beady, president of Piney Woods Country Life School. "I kind of believe in that." Minnesota officials are touting Piney Woods, one of the last black boarding school in the nation, as a model for Gov. Arne Carlson's plan to open three new residential boarding schools in the state. It's a school that focuses on rules and results.

Extractions: Governor Carlson's $12 million bonding proposal to fund boarding schools got another hearing at the capitol February 11. The schools would serve "at risk" juveniles who have had no major criminal problems. The proposal for Minnesota may be modeled after the Milton-Hershey School in Hershey, Pennsylvania. HOUSE SPEAKER NEWT GINGRICH sparked debate over so-called residential education programs in 1994 when he suggested placing poor children in orphanages. Critics recalled images of mistreated street urchins in the film Oliver Twist while supporters praised the model as portrayed in the film classic Boys Town, about the work of the Reverend Edward J. Flanagan in Nebraska.

Extractions: More than 2,000 children attended the school during its history. It was established in 1887 by the Catholic Sisters of Mercy, who ran it under contract with the U.S. government. In 1896 the federal government began to operate the school. Called the Morris Industrial School for Indians, it was at times the largest Indian boarding school in Minnesota. The Morris school was one of a series of government boarding schools nationwide. They were an important part of a national policy to "assimilate" or blend Indians into Euro-American society. It was believed this would not happen unless Native Americans left their own culture behind. A radical aspect of this strategy was to separate children from their homes for long periods of time and send them to boarding schools where they were "taught" to become Euro-American. Children as young as kindergarten age attended the Morris school. The children were allowed to speak only English. They were required to dress and style their hair like Euro-Americans. Sometimes they were not allowed to return home over the summer, in part to keep them from being overly-influenced by their own cultures.

"I had a big tardy issue," said the tall, slender 17-year-old. Most schools try to persuade students to get out of bed in the morning by lowering their grades or giving them detention when they don't, but Maya Angelou is one of a small but growing number of schools that have a different approach to the problem. They invite teenagers who need extra help to live in school quarters.
