ROTC is not a major field of study. Rather, it is a program in which students pursue a baccalaureate degree and take leadership, management, and other military-oriented courses that qualify them to accept a commission as an officer in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve, or National Guard upon graduation. The program provides a general knowledge of the contemporary role of the Army in support of national objectives, and affords a practicum in leadership and management skills. Credits earned in military science courses apply toward graduation requirements. The Army ROTC program is divided into two parts, the basic course (freshman and sophomore years) and the advanced course (junior and senior years). Both courses are administered at Marquette University. Students enrolled in ROTC must pay a one-time $25 part-time studies application fee. Credit hours earned at Marquette University are transferred to UWM student transcripts and count towards GPA and elective credit.

Select type of search People Finder Search ETSU Google Search ETSU Home Armyrotc BucBattalion History of the Buccaneer Battalion The Reserve Officers' Training Corps was established by the National Defense Act of 1916 to train men on college campuses who were to be commissioned. However, the campaign to establish a Senior ROTC detachment at East Tennessee State College was by no means an easy task. In 1950, University President Dr. C. C. Sherrod, was invited by the Commanding General of the Third Army to attend a regional ROTC conference at Georgia Tech. The conference was being held to consider all aspects of the Senior ROTC program. Burgin Dossett, who had become the new University President, considered this letter to be an invitation to start a Senior ROTC program at East Tennessee State College. Dr. Dossett was mistaken. Headquarters, Third Army, did not know that Dr. Dossett had replaced Dr. Sherrod as president, and Sherrod had been specifically invited as president of the Tennessee College Association. The conference at Georgia Tech was cancelled due to the outbreak of the Korean War. Dossett, however, had set himself on a personal quest to establish a ROTC unit at East Tennessee State College. Dr. Dossett wrote to Colonel W. I. Sherwood, Chief of the Tennessee Military District, explaining that the facilities at East Tennessee State College were indeed adequate to accommodate a ROTC department. An inspection was held and the results were favorable. Of the 20 schools inspected, Memphis State Teachers College, Vanderbilt University, East Tennessee State College and Austin Peay College were recommended.

Although it does not grant degrees, its courses provide students with education in the role of the military and instruction in leadership and management. Military science gives students who want to serve on active or reserve status in the armed forces the opportunity to earn commissions as Army officers. It also administers financial assistance and merit scholarships from the U.S. government to qualified students. Courses are open to all students. Course credit that may be applied toward graduation varies. In the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, up to 20 s.h. may be applied toward graduation. Basic Course The ROTC basic course is designed primarily for first- and second-year students. It provides the fundamentals of leadership and management and introduces the roles of the military as affected by national and foreign policy. Benefits Army ROTC offers UM-St. Louis students: A challenging, important, well-paid job at graduation in one of the many professional fields that the modern Army has to offer. Army officers serve in such fields as intelligence, military police, communications, engineering, transportation management, finance, combat arms, hospital administration, nursing, and research and development. Starting salary with allowances of an active duty second lieutenant is approximately $27,000. Within four years he/she should be promoted to captain with a salary and allowances of nearly $48,000. Reserve officers attend one weekend per month and an annual two-week training camp. College financing. All advance course and Army ROTC scholarship students receive $200/month stipend. Only scholarship students receive $450 for books and supplies. Also, advance course students may join the Reserves as an officer trainee and receive pay while in college. Full-time enrolled students may compete for the Army ROTC scholarship. The scholarship pays for tuition, fees, and books.

Over $900 is provided per month in additional pay as an officer trainee while in the National Guard. All courses offered by the School of Military Sciences are accredited by the University. However, the credit granted for degree plans varies by college and often by department. For precise information, consult the associate dean or department head. Students not enrolled in an ROTC program may be permitted to take ROTC courses as electives with the advance approval of the professor of military science, the professor of aerospace studies, or the professor of naval science, as appropriate, and the concurrence of the head of the School of Military Sciences. State law permits the substitution of 3 hours of history and 3 hours of political science for a student in the program of an approved senior ROTC unit. Extractions: Questions ... At the start of World War II, many American educational institutions organized local hospital units to serve medical and surgical needs overseas. Syracuse University was no exception. The Department of War had authorized the creation of these mobile hospitals in 1940 even before the United States entered the war. The first recruitment meeting for the U.S. Army 52nd General Hospital, the unit affiliated with the Syracuse University College of Medicine, occurred early in 1941, many months before Pearl Harbor. The five members of the original committee were Wardner D. Ayer, M.D., Clyde Barney, M.D., Richard S. Farr, M.D., Harry Steckel, M.D., and Dean of the College of Medicine Herman G. Weiskotten, M.D. Dr. Farr was chosen as senior officer with Dr. Ayer as his aide. The Army commissioned the 52nd on September 1, 1942 and ordered it to Camp Livingston, Louisiana for basic training. On November 14, 1942 it was relocated to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey for additional training before it sailed for England on January 6, 1943. After a week on the high seas in peril of U-boats, the 52nd debarked in Scotland and travelled by train to cold, wet, coke-heated temporary quarters in Somerset. Gradually, through the spring of that year, the unit moved into its permanent quarters in Wolverly, near Kidderminster in Worcestershire. The first patient was admitted on April 15, 1943. The unit remained at that location until June 26, 1945, when it was transferred to Bristol and thence, in September, home to be disbanded.
