National Teachers Enhancement Network: Course Description In this course, we will first address some basic aspects of microbiology as they In addition to assigned textbook and syllabus readings and online http://www.scienceteacher.org/courses/mb539.htm
Extractions: Cost: appx $760 In this course, we will first address some basic aspects of microbiology as they relate to infectious disease. How are microbes different from each other and from humans, and why do these differences matter? How do antimicrobial agents kill or inhibit microbes without seriously harming humans? How do microbes aquire resistance to antimicrobial agents? Attention will then turn to the immune system, with emphasis on the roles of the immune system in infectious disease. Finally, and for about two-thirds of the course, we will examine important infectious diseases of humans: their causes, pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention. In addition to assigned textbook and syllabus readings and online discussion, participants in the course will analyze scientific journal articles and solve case histories involving infectious disease and immunology. INSTRUCTORS: Norman D. Reed, Ph.D., is Emeritus Professor of Microbiology, Montana State University - Bozeman, and Affiliate Professor of Microbiology, University of Washington School of Medicine. Prof. Reed has taught courses in immunology and infectious disease to undergraduate, medical, and graduate students and served as first coordinator of MSU's Master of Science in Science Education program.
Extractions: Health Sciences Center The Microbiology Graduate Program has 18 faculty members, and there are currently 21 Ph.D. students enrolled in the Program. Close individual attention is given by the faculty to the needs and training of each graduate student. Approximately 200 students are enrolled in a variety of Ph.D. programs at the Health Sciences Center. Students in these programs share many educational and scientific activities, as well as social and intramural sporting activities. First year students in most of the basic science Ph.D. programs take a common core course during the fall and winter quarters, and part of the winter quarter and the spring quarter are used for elective courses. All graduate students are encouraged to participate in the Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium, where students share their research accomplishments with other students and faculty. THE HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER The Health Sciences Center campus of the University of Colorado includes the University Hospital, the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy. The Microbiology Graduate Program is a component of the Graduate School within the School of Medicine. The Health Sciences Center is a modern facility located in a pleasant residential neighborhood just east of downtown Denver. It is a safe and quiet neighborhood, within easy reach of city parks, shopping and the downtown area. There are reasonably priced apartments and rental housing near the campus. Many of the students, post-doctoral fellows and faculty live within walking or biking distance of the campus.

Extractions: Washington State University Home Schedule of Studies Microbiology is both a basic and an applied science that studies microorganisms and their activities. It is concerned with their form, structure, reproduction, physiology, and identification. It includes the study of their distribution in nature, their relationship to each other and to other living things, their beneficial and detrimental effects on human beings, and the physical and chemical changes they make in their environment. Employment opportunities in industrial, government, hospital, and private laboratories and agencies are excellent for qualified graduates. Areas in which the unit is prepared to direct research include the biology of membranes, bioremediation, molecular genetics, molecular basis of cell-cell interactions and virulence, microbial differentiation, cellular and tumor immunology and the regulation of the immune response. The Microbiology degree program offers options in general microbiology and medical technology, leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. Requirements for the general microbiology option and for the medical technology option are the same except that Biol 418 is required for the medical technology option. A one-year internship in an accredited school of medical technology is required after graduation for those interested in becoming certified medical technologists. At the graduate level, the school offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science in Microbiology and Doctor of Philosophy (Microbiology).
